Gene Pitney
Gene Francis Pitney (Hartford, Connecticut, 17 februari 1941 – Cardiff, Wales, 5 april 2006) was een Amerikaans zanger en songwriter.

Loopbaan
Pitney was voornamelijk in de jaren zestig populair, met hits als Twenty-four hours from Tulsa en Only love can break a heart. Zijn stem had een zeer karakteristieke klank met dramatische uithalen.
Voordat Pitney zelf een carrière als zanger begon schreef hij nummers voor andere artiesten, waaronder The Crystals (He's a rebel), Ricky Nelson (Hello Mary Lou) en Roy Orbison (Today's teardrops).
Eind jaren tachtig genoot hij een comeback met een nieuwe versie van zijn oude hit Something's gotten hold of my heart, dat hij ditmaal als duet zong met Marc Almond, ooit de zanger van de Britse band Soft Cell.
Pitney overleed op vijfenzestigjarige leeftijd tijdens een tournee in Groot-Brittannië als gevolg van een hartstilstand in zijn slaap. Zijn stagemanager vond hem in zijn hotelkamer.
