Deze soort komt voor in Indonesië, Papoea-Nieuw-Guinea en de Salomonseilanden en telt 3 ondersoorten:

Chalcophaps stephani stephani: de Kei-eilanden, oostelijk Nieuw-Guinea, de Admiraliteitseilanden en de Bismarckarchipel.
Chalcophaps stephani wallacei: Celebes en de Sula-eilanden (Taliabu).
Chalcophaps stephani mortoni: de Salomonseilanden (van Bougainville tot San Cristóbal en Santa Anna).
