Zuzana Mauréry

Zuzana Mauréry (born 23 September 1968) is a Slovak television, movie and theatre actress and a musical singer. She lives in Bratislava. Her husband was Ondrej Šoth, a Slovak choreograph and stage manager. She is a four-time candidate for national movie awards and a two-time laureate for The Sun in a Net Awards, for the leading female role.[1] She is also a member of the Slovak movie and television academy.[2]

“The key to success is teamwork and co-operation. A single person or entity does not have the ability to succeed alone. It is always in the combination of circumstances.” (Zuzana Mauréry)[3]

Youth

Zuzana comes from a family of musicians. Her father, Pavol Mauréry, was an opera soloist in the Slovak National Theatre[4][5] for many years, while her mother, Darina Markovičová,[5] was a choir soprano in the former theatre New Scene / Nová scéna.[5][6] She was born as their only child, during the period of normalization, shortly after the military intervention of the Warsaw pact in Czechoslovakia.

Study

Thanks to the profession of her parents, she grew up being financially secure. “They frequently went to the West, which meant I my clothes were quite western. I was the first in my school to wear the so-called zipper pants”.[7] While attending a middle school for German speakers, she also had dance and piano lessons. Musicals soon fascinated her by their unusual form, however, the singing itself not so much. “I spent my childhood locked up in my room, while my parents had their practice session – which was basically non-stop. I wanted to become a stewardess and study languages, which is why I started learining English alongside German”.[4] However, her parents persuaded her to start studying informatics at the nearby Juraj Hronec Grammar school in Bratislava, which was mainly focused on mathematical physics.[8] Despite her focus on natural sciences, Mauréry successfully finished her studies in acting on the Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU). She studied alongside such well-known actors as Roman Pomajbo, Peter Mankovecký, Dagmar Bruckmayerová, Zuzana Vačková and Silvia Vargová.[9]

Work

Filmography

Mauréry's filmography is represented by more than 10 fiction films (both short and feature length), tens of distinct television productions (movies, performances, series, comedy shows and other various types of programs). The actress's theatrical carrier is composed of many high-quality performances of various genres (comedies, dramas, musicals, variety shows).[9] Her first performance on the theatrical stage was in 1985 in Reduta (until 1993 - Theatrical studio of the Academy of Performing Arts). She performed alongside her father in the Opera Iolanta by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.[10]

Discography

Mauréry never released her own album or single. Her discography consists almost exclusively of recordings from musical plays, with occasional additional vocal contributions on recordings of other performers.

Successes and awards

Mauréry has been nominated four times for a Slovak film and television academy (SFTA) award – twice for a main role and twice for a minor role. She has also been a two-time laureate for the Igric awards, headed together by the Slovak film union (SFZ), Union of creators for Slovak television (ÚSTT) and the Literary fund (LF).

Her initial nomination for the Sun in a Net award, is a result of her role in her third feature movie Return of the Storks (2007), directed by Martin Repka,[11] where she played the side character Gita. However, the award was given to Jana Oľhová, because of her role of the mother-in-law in the tragicomedy Music by Juraj Nvota.[12] Zuzana received the national movie award in 2014, when she was nominated by the SFTA twice at the same time. She managed to convince the expert jury with her performance in the bilingual drama by Mátyas Prikler Fine, thanks (2012),[1] where she played the role of the mother. At the same time, she was nominated by the Czech movie and television Academy (ČFTA) for the Czech Lion award, for her role in the movie Colette (2013),[13] by Milan Cieslar, where she played the role of Broder.

In both cases the award slipped through her fingers (in Slovakia Jana Oľhová managed to beat her again, while in the Czech Republic she was bested by Jaroslava Pokorná,[14] she was awarded the national creativity award Igric, for the Best female performance in a movie or on TV.[15]

Some of her more notable television accomplishments include her portrayal of Ivana Jevanová in the series Fraction of a second (2011) by Ľuba Vančíková, which earned her a financial premium in the LF in 2012.[16] She earned a second Igric award for her performance in a different RTVS (Radio and Television of Slovakia) series Secret lives (2014), directed by Ján Sebechlebský, where she played the role of Eva Lustigová.[17] When it comes to mainstream entertainment, her appearance and performance in the competitive dance show Showdance (2010) on TV JOJ,[4][18] earned her the title “Queen of dancing”,[19][20] which came with a decorative crown. For her stage performance of the role of Ronny in the musical Hair (2003)[21] in the theatre New Scene / Nová scéna, she received an annual award from the LF in 2004.

Taking into consideration additional activities, Maréry is a co-author of the movie I am Bigger and Better (2007), which combines animated and acted scenes. She worked on the subject with Martin Duda, who is an absolvent of the Prague FAMU (Film and TV school of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague).[22][23][24] This minor deed received a positive reception on various competitive movie festivals,[25][26][27] including an international nomination from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the best student film of foreign origin.[22] A different short movie, Almost There (2014), was under the guidance of Nonchalant (an alias of Mauréry). It won the prize for the best ensemble of actors on the 13th annual international film festival 24-hour Film Race held in Brooklyn. Almost There featured such names as Gregor Hološka, Peter Kadlečík, Michal Jánoš, Anna Rakovská, Juraj Šimko, Mária Breiner-Mačáková and Viera Frajtová.[28]

Charity and public welfare

Since the end of the first decade of the 21st century, the actress has been active in the spheres of social responsibility and charity. While she focuses mostly on her home city when it comes to protecting the environment, she tends to focus mostly on children and the elderly when it comes to charity and social help.

In January 2010 she played a key role in a written appeal regarding the preservation of the local Park of Culture and Relaxation, to the leaders of cultural and scientific development. Other key members include the ecologist Mikuláš Huba, actress Zuzana Kronerová and the member of parliament for the Old Town city district in Bratislava - Ivan Bútora.[36][37][38] A year later she became one of six diplomats of the environmental project of the capital, called Hanging Gardens of Bratislava.[39][40] She promoted this project in March 2011 by giving a thematic interview to TV Bratislava, which is the local metropolitan television.[40]

In 2009,[41] 2010[42][43] and 2012,[44][45] she repeatedly supported the nonprofit organization Foundation of the children of Slovakia, through their public charity Hour for kids,[43][44][45] without royalties.[43][45] She took part in a similar campaign in September 2010, Barrier's account, which was focused on helping children and disabled youths. It was founded by a nongovernmental organization The Children's fund of Slovakia.[46][47] Mauréry started working with the SOCIA (Foundation for the Support of Social Change) fund shortly afterwards. She worked on the marketing campaign for the calendar Age affects us (2011). The actress lent her likeness to the campaign Helping Ladybird, which is focused on helping elderly people.[48][49] During the Concert of all generations, which was organized by the same group two years later, she co-performed together with her father.[50][51][52]

The actress appeared in a similar spirit on various other concerts. She appeared on the 7th charitable concert of the Humanitarian council of Slovakia – Benificium (2008),[53][54] a couple of years later she appeared on the concert Flame of hope (2001) taking place a day before Christmas and sponsored by the fund Headquarters of hope.[55][56] In 2010 she symbolically supported the cause of homeless people by baptizing the book of Július, a former street vendor of the NotaBene magazine.[57]

I am looking for paths to various people, hopefully fate helps me continue this endeavor, which would make me happy. After all, the journey is the goal, and nothing is as important as love…Finding a path to yourself, is in my opinion enough workload for half a lifetime. Even being a woman is tough enough.” [58] (Zuzana Mauréry)
