Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Zayyad was raised in Lahore, and played under-19 district cricket for the Lahore City Whites during both the 1996–97 and 1997–98 seasons.[1] His team made the final of the National Junior Cup in both those seasons, losing to a Karachi team on the first occasion,[2] but defeating the Rawalpindi under-19s the second time around.[3] A right-handed opening batsman, Zayyad scored a half-century in the second innings of the 1997–98 final, and was subsequently selected for the Pakistani under-19 team that toured England in July and August 1998. He made his under-19 Test debut in the third and final Test of the series, played at the County Ground, Chelmsford.[4] He came in seventh in the batting order on debut, between future senior internationals Imran Nazir and Humayun Farhat, but scored only five runs before being out leg before wicket to Paul Franks.[5]

Zayyad signed to Redco for the 1998–99 domestic season, with the team playing in the non-first-class Patron's Trophy Grade-II tournament. His most notable performance there was an innings of 76 against Pakistan Air Force, in a match where one of his teammates was fast bowler Waqar Younis.[6] After winning the competition, Redco were elevated to the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy for the 1999–2000 season, where matches had first-class status. Zayyad made his sole first-class appearance towards the end of the season, against Agriculture Development Bank at Islamabad's Marghzar Cricket Ground.[7] With the match affected by rain, he had only a single opportunity to bat, and made five runs opening the batting with Naved Ashraf. The bowler who claimed his wicket was Azhar Abbas, who went on to take a five-wicket haul.[8]
