Young Chelsea Bridge Club

The Young Chelsea Bridge Club is a (duplicate) contract bridge club now permanently situated at its own premises at 54 Goldhawk Road, Shepherd's Bush in London.

Established in 1968, the "YC" has long been one of the focal points of British duplicate bridge, and crucial to the development of bridge in England for over five decades.


The Club currently organises games every Monday and Friday evening. The Club is also home to Nick Sandqvist's London Super League, which hosts teams matches fortnightly on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

From January 2020, the club will offer a teaching program including lessons and supervised play. The "Goldhawks" league for players who prefer more social rather than competitive bridge will also start in January. Please contact the club if you are interested in becoming a Goldhawk.

In 2006 the Club founder and secretary, Warwick Pitch, retired; ownership of the Club was transferred to its members, on behalf of whom it is held by a discretionary trust. Since that time, the Club has been run by an elected committee, with the active assistance of an appointed sub-committee. The day to day activities of the club are run by Nick Sandqvist, David Muller and Rosie White.

Hammersmith Chess Club

In January 2020, Hammersmith Chess Club (HCC) reached agreement with the YC to co-share their premises[1], relocating from their long-time home at Lytton Residents Hall, in nearby West Kensington. The Goldhawk Road premises will now host all HCC Club Nights and home league games on Tuesday evenings, thereby bringing London's largest chess club by membership, under the same roof.

Hammersmith Chess Club was founded in 1962[2] and as of 2020 boasts over 100 members[3], including Grandmaster Keith Arkell. The club fields 12 teams across different league competitions in London and the surrounding areas.[4]

Go

In 2018, the YC accepted an offer, via the British Go Association (BGA), to financially co-share their premises, and thus co-host the recreated London Go Centre.[5]

  • The Lederer Memorial Trophy (International) - at the RAC in Pall Mall in 2013, on account of current temporary accommodation.
  • The Garden Cities Trophy (National)
  • The Champions Cup (contested by the Home Counties)
  • The London Championship Pairs
  • The Daily Telegraph Cup (discontinued)
  • The Young Chelsea Marathon (following a hiatus after 2009, it has been successfully restarted as a Half Marathon (=12 hours) and has been played five times since October 2012)

The Club also holds heats of many national events, as well as County events run by the London Metropolitan Bridge Association, which uses Club premises for its AGM.
