According to a 2013 study it was the 118th-most common surname, shared by 1,640,000 people or 0.120% of the population, with the province with the most people being Hunan.[2]

It is derived from at least two sources:[3]

  1. from the personal name 顏, the style name of Duke Wu of Zhu, the king of the state of Zhu, during the Western Zhou dynasty
  2. from the name of a fief in modern Shandong province granted to Bo Qin, son of Duke of Zhou the first king of Lu during the Western Zhou dynasty
