West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences

The West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences was established on 2 January 1995 by a Legislative Act (West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Science Act-VI,1995). Before this, veterinary education in the state was imparted by Bengal Veterinary College, a premier institution of the country which was established in 1893. It was the second oldest veterinary college in the country and the college was expanded, enriched and functioned under the University of Calcutta until 1974. In 1974, the college was merged with Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya in Mohanpur, district Nadia, as the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences.

The university in its current form was established with three distinct faculties namely Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (Belgachia, Kolkata (PG) & Mohanpur, Nadia (UG), Faculty of Fishery Sciences (Chakgaria, Kolkata) and Faculty of Dairy Technology (Mohanpur, Nadia). The university headquarter is situated at Brlgachia, Kolkata. It offers different courses in Veterinary, Animal Sciences and Fishery Sciences. The university is recognized by the University Grant Commission and also accredited by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

The university is also actively engaged in research and extension activities through the Directorate of Research, Extension and Farms functioning with three Krishi Vigyan Kendra's (Jaipaiguri, Murshidabad and North 24 PGS). The university is equipped with modern laboratory facilities, animal hospital and Farms.[1]
