War of the Wolf

War of the Wolf is the eleventh historical novel in The Saxon Stories series by Bernard Cornwell. It was first published in October 2018.[1][2]

It is set in 10th-century England and continues to follow the fortunes of the fictional Uhtred of Bebbanburg. In this novel Uhtred is finally secure in his childhood home, Bebbanburg. It is the next stage in a long story that has many fans.[3]

It begins with Uhtred deciding to do nothing after Ælfwynn the daughter of his old friend and ally Æthelflæd is deposed by King Edward of Wessex (Edward the Elder). But he then gets drawn into the wars in Mercia, and also continuing Norse invasions. He is also asked to play a role in the likely conflict between Æthelstan and his younger half-brother Ælfweard when King Edward dies. But this is still unresolved at the end of the book.

There is a brief but significant appearance by the Norse poet and warrior Egill Skallagrímsson.
