Volos Derby

Derby of Volos is a rivalry between Volos-based association football clubs Niki Volos and Olympiacos Volos. The original venue of Niki Volou was the Pantelis Magoulas Stadium with 5,000 capacity, while Olympiacos Volou was playing their home games at Volos Municipal Stadium. From the season 2018–19 both teams play their home games in Neapolis Municipal Stadium with 2,500 capacity.

Background

There are no traces about how the rivalry began, but many fans of both teams support that the main evidence of their rivalry is the different origins of every team. Niki Volos is a symbol of refugees, as it founded by Greek refugees from Izmir in western Anatolia, who came in Volos after the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922). The refugees settled in Nea Ionia, a municipality of Volos. On the other hand, Olympiacos Volos founded by natives in the neighborhood of Agios Konstantinos, thirteen years after Niki Volos, and represents Volos.
