Veselovsky Reservoir

Veselovsky Reservoir is a reservoir in Rostov-on-Don Rostov Oblast, Russia on Manych River (western Manych). It was founded in 1941. It provides a longstanding river flow. The normal retaining level (NRL) is more than 7 m. The full water storage is under NRL - 190 million quadratic meters, the water surface spreads under NRL in 238 quadratic kilometers, average depth is 4,3 m.

The “Veselovsky” reservoir extands 98 km southwest from the “Veselyj” village to the “Manychstroj” village. The maximum width is 7 km. The “Proletarskoje” reservoir is placed in the upstream and “Ust'-Manychskoe” resoirvouir is situated in the downstream. The reservoir is used for irrigation of agricultural areas, fisheries, water traffic and power engineering.

There is a late Paleolithic camp “Yulovskaja” 5 km southweast from “Yulovskij” hamlet on the shore of “Veselovsky” reservoir .

General Physical and Geographical Characteristics

The shoreline is nearly 500 km long. It is rugged, gulfs are formed by flooded gullies. There are “Russkij”, “Bolshoy”, “Sen’kina”, “Krolichij”, “Zherebkov”, and “Darzhinskij” other islands there. The northern bank is precipitous, the height reaches 19-24 m above the sea level and 9-14 above a water surface. The southern bank is sloping, covered with reed.

A part of the shore is fortified with |white acacia plantations, rice systems are located in the Northern and Eastern parts of the reservoir.

Hydrographic web is weakly developed. The reservoir is situated between the “Sal’sko-Manychevskoja” ridge and the “Stavropolskaja” Hill.

Climate

Climate is continental moderate[1]. The continentality of the climate increases, and the amount of precipitation decreases. The average annual rainfall is 522 mm[2].

Communities

There are “Veselij” village, “Karkashev”, “Russkij”, “Dalnij”, “Stepnoy Kurgan” hamlets situated on the banks of the “Veselovskoe” reservoir. There is a “Proletarsk” city on the bank of the bay.

Flora and Fauna

Flora of the reservoir and its floodplain is presented by different kinds of reed, tuberecamysh, cattail, rdest, hornwort, bosom, scab and other plants.

Fauna is presented by 87 kinds of phytoplankton, 33 kinda of fish. The main fishing aim is bream, Rutilus lacustris, zander.

There are 3 kinds of amphibians and 8 kinda of reptiles are registered on the territory of the reservoir and nearby areas.

There are 19 kinds of rare and endangered birds[3] and two kinds of mammals, which are recorded into the Red book.

“Veselovsky” reservoir has a status of wetlands[4] of international importance and is secured by Ramsar convention[5].
