Veeranattar

Veeranattar (or Veera Nattar) is a Tamil speaking community prevalent in southern India. The community is mostly distributed in the Pandya Nadu,Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tiruchendur districts of Tamil Nadu. The Veeranattars are major landlords in part of Tirunelveli districts. This community calls their mother 'Aththa'.[1]

Legends

Veeranattars say they are actually descendants of the Pallavas, a ruling race of South India in the 7th and 8th centuries.[1]

Kilakottai Landlords

Veeranattars and Devendra Kulathars form the dominant community of the village of Kilakottai, Kovilpatti Taluk,Thirunelveli district. The other holdings are distributed among other communities. The landed people are among the Veeranattars and Devendra Kulathars.[1]

Veeranattars of Pandya Nadu suffix the title Nattar to their name.[1]

Organisation

The Veeranattars have separate caste Panchayats to look after their interests of their communities. The Veeranattars is headed by hereditary chief of the caste known as Ur Kudumbar. The Ur Kudumbar has an assistant known as 'ChinnaKudumbar'. This two people preside over meetings of the caste panchayat and along with other elders of the community arbitrate on the disputes between members of their caste.[1]
