Vats (clan)

Vats, also known as Vatsa, is a gotra of Brahmins found in India. They are a member of the Bhrigu section of gotras.[1]

Historian Swati Datta (1989) analysed a number of ancient and medieval inscriptions that mention migrant Brahmins, including those belonging to the Vatsa gotra. Out of the fifteen Vatsas mentioned in these inscriptions, seven migrated to present-day Odisha, three each to Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, and one each to Maharashtra and Bengal.[2]

History

It is said that vatsa ( on whom the clan is named) is 4th vatsa in bhrigu lineage. And was 23rd generation from bhrigu rishi. Vatsa is the man behind vastu and he is the sage behind the discovery of kamaakya mata temple which was lost in times. One of vatsa clan member vatsayan wrote famous indian book of kamasutra. Chankya was also considered from this gotra. According to legends vatsa and saraswat rishi are brother while saraswat born to saraswati, vatsa born to viredehnu/videhnu. After birth of saraswat saraswati went back to his adobe leaving her son with the boon of all vedic knowledge. Viredehnu or videhnu look after saraswat later. After getting adult saraswat left for teaching the world but before that he share all his vedic knowledge with vatsa rishi, this is why saraswat brahmin community and vatsa clan have a special connection and a person belong to both i.e. saraswat brahmin of vatsa gotra(clan) is consider superior. Rig veda's 10th mandala was contributed by vatsa rishi.
