He has previously coached the Catalans Dragons in the Super League and held coaching positions at Toulouse Olympique and the Newcastle Knights. As a player he played for the Wests Tigers and the Parramatta Eels in the National Rugby League, and Toulouse in the Elite One Championship.

Background

Robinson was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Playing career

A former St Gregory's student,[3] Robinson played 3 games from the bench for the Wests Tigers in 2000 & 2001. He was the first player to ever make his first grade debut with Wests Tigers without previously having played with another team. In 2002 he joined the Brian Smith-coached Parramatta Eels, playing in a solitary game.

Coaching career

After a playing stint with Toulouse Olympique, Robinson succeeded Justin Morgan as coach in 2005.[4] He was assistant coach with the Newcastle Knights for 3 years before seeking a release to join Smith at Sydney Roosters.[5] Robinson was the assistant coach in charge of defence in the Roosters' run to the Grand Final in 2010.[6]

Catalans Dragons

At the end of the 2010 season, French-speaking Robinson took over from Kevin Walters as coach at Catalans Dragons.[7]

Sydney Roosters

On 7 September 2012 it was announced that Robinson had been appointed as Head Coach of the Sydney Roosters for a three-year term, starting in 2013.[8] At 35 years old, he was the youngest coach in the NRL.[9] [10]

Robinson became only the 2nd rookie NRL coach to claim a minor premiership after the Roosters defeated arch rivals South Sydney in round 26 of 2013. He claimed the Coach of the Year at the 2013 Dally M Awards, becoming the youngest ever winner and only the second coach in NRL history and just the sixth since the Dally M Awards started in 1980 to be named the league's best coach in his first season.[11]

He capped this historic season by leading his team to the Premiership title and to the Grand Final victory, becoming only the sixth rookie coach Premiership winner.[12] At the end of the 2013 season he received the Rugby League International Federation's coach of the year award.[13] He also led the Roosters to minor premierships in 2014, 2015 and 2018.

On 30 September 2018, Robinson coached Easts to their 14th premiership and their 2nd in 6 years as the Roosters defeated Melbourne 21-6 in the 2018 NRL Grand Final.[14]

At the end of the 2019 regular season, Robinson guided the club to a 2nd placed finish behind minor premiers Melbourne.[15][16] Robinson would then coach the club to their second consecutive premiership as they defeated Canberra 14-8 in the 2019 NRL Grand Final at ANZ Stadium. It was the first time that a club had won consecutive premierships in a unified competition since Brisbane achieved the feat in 1992 and 1993.[17][18][19]

On 22 February 2020, Robinson guided the Sydney Roosters to the 2020 World Club Challenge trophy after defeating St Helens R.F.C. 20-12.[20]
