Torre de' Passeri

Torre de 'Passeri is an Italian town of 3,172 inhabitants in the province of Pescara in Abruzzo. It owes its name to the ancient "Turris Passum" (Torre del passo), a tower located near the Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria. Characteristic of Torre de 'Passeri is an ancient castle, the Gizzi Castle (called by the locals "Castelluccio"), which overlooks the entire town. Some historical-enological research suggests that the territory of the municipality may be the native land of the Montepulciano vine.

History

Torre de'Passeri is located in the territory of Casauriense and the dawn of its documentary history is closely linked to the Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria; it is in fact to the Chronicon Casauriense that we must go back to have the first news on the "Villa Bectorrita or Vectorrita", name that immediately suggests a tower that actually had to exist on the current locality Torrione, which was incorporated into the lands of the monastery between the years 873 and 882.

The definitive name "Torre de 'Passeri" derives from the ancient "Turris Passum" (Torre del passo). The tower, in fact, stood at the point where the river Pescara was divided into many small rivulets, which could be crossed with a step or so. At night a light was lit to facilitate the travelers in the crossing, which was to be paid with a toll.

From the past to today

After various historical events, Torre de 'Passeri, in 1652, became a possession of the Mazara Marquises of Sulmona, thanks to which, from a small town of few inhabitants, it became an important economic center.

The Baron Mazara, in fact, gave up land, provided construction material and various financing to all the Torresi who wanted to build a house and to those who wanted to move to undertake an activity. These aids explain the arrival of some families of Castelli (TE) potters, such as the Pompeii, the Antici, the Cappelletti and the Fraticelli, who started the production of the Torrese ceramics, giving life to a flourishing industry that lasted until the first decades of the '900. Torre de'Passeri thus became the most important economic center of the surrounding area.

Culture The Palazzo della Memoria, inaugurated on 1 February 2014 in memory of the victims of the Aquilan earthquake, is a sort of "Citadel of Culture": seat of the city associations and of a "Museum of Ancient Arts and Crafts" (under construction) in which will be exhibited evidence of the rural and artisan culture of the village between the 19th and 20th centuries; it also hosts a Music Room (completely soundproof) and a Conference and Video projection room. The latter was named after Daniela Bortoletti and Martina Di Battista, two young university students who died in L'Aquila, under the rubble of the earthquake of 6 April 2009. The structure of Via San Rocco, anchored to the hill overlooking the historic center of Torre de 'Passeri, it is also known as the Palazzo ex-Municipio because, between the 50s and 70s, it housed the municipal house. Today it is again usable thanks to consolidation, renovation and functional rehabilitation. Inside the Scuola della Scuola (home of the primary school) there is the Regional Library, organized by the Regional Cultural Promotion Agency, which boasts more than 5,000 titles, with an adjoining study room. This area, in fact, inserted in the wine route "Tremonti" with open cellars for tasting and selling products, is the native land of this vine and here originated the first major production of wines in the area.

The close link between the village and the Arrosticini, a typical Abruzzese product, is also very important, as evidenced by the numerous producers in the area.

Sport facilities Bocciodromo Comunale. A multi-purpose structure designed to meet different needs, from sports to leisure, both for young people and for the elderly, to culture and to social life. The ground floor building is divided into two, a space with two bowls fields and another dedicated to spectators, but also suitable for hosting conventions and events, with tables, chairs and a ping-pong table. On the upper floor there is a reduced floor with a pool table. The Villa Comunale "150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy" is a real Citadel of Sport.
