Life and Career

Early Career and Allstar Weekend

Norris was born in Massachusetts, and grew up in suburban San Diego.[4] During high school, Norris started the band Allstar Weekend with friends.[4] Allstar Weekend gained popularity through Radio Disney’s “The Next Big Thing” competition[5] and was subsequently offered a record deal with Hollywood Records. Shortly before signing, Norris left the band to attend college at UC Berkeley, stating that while Allstar Weekend was a “huge learning experience,” he enjoyed “being in a studio far more than performing.”[4] He is credited with co-writing and producing a bulk of Suddenly, the band’s debut EP, which peaked at number 62 on the Billboard 200.[6] At UC Berkeley, Norris studied linguistics, and in his free time, began learning more advanced music production and sound design in programs FL Studio and Ableton. He gained online popularity through his SoundCloud profile, getyoursnackon, and various Reddit music threads, where users enjoyed his close remakes of popular songs.[4]

Working with Grey and Zedd

Norris first started working with the EDM duo Grey in 2014, after meeting member Kyle Trewartha through Reddit.[4] In 2016, Norris mixed the single Starving by Grey, Hailee Steinfeld, and Zedd.[7] Starving peaked at No. 5 on the Pop Songs chart[8] and went 4X certified platinum.[9] Norris is credited with mixing a number of Grey projects over the years, including their debut EP, Chameleon, and songs and remixes for Selena Gomez, Camila Cabello, and Mike Posner.[7] In 2018, Norris mixed The Middle, by Grey, Maren Morris, and Zedd.[7] The song peaked at No. 1 on the Pop Songs chart[10], gained over 1 billion streams globally[2], won Song of the Year at the iHeartRadio Music Awards[11], won Top Dance/Electronic Song at the Billboard Music Awards[12], and earned Norris his first Grammy Award nomination for mixing under the category of Record of the Year.[1]

Collaborating with Skrillex

Norris and Skrillex began working together in 2017, after meeting through a mutual friend.[4] Norris is credited with mixing, co-producing, engineering, and mastering[7] a number of Skrillex-tied projects including remixes of Kendrick Lamar’s Humble, Travis Scott’s Sicko Mode, Ekali’s Babylon, and Pendulum’s The Island Pt. 1, singles such as From First To Last’s Surrender, Face My Fears with Hikaru Utada for the opening theme song to the video game Kingdom Hearts III, and music for EPs including The Weeknd's My Dear Melancholy, Ed Sheeran's No.6 Collaborations Project, Dog Blood's Turn Off the Lights, and more.[7] In 2019, Norris earned his second Grammy Award nomination for mixing, under the category of Best Dance Recording, for his work on Midnight Hour[1] by Skrillex, Ty Dolla $ign, and Boys Noize.

More Notable Projects

More notable projects Norris has worked on include those for U2, Cheat Codes, XXXTENTACION, Ansel Elgort, BloodPop®, Elohim, Porter Robinson, Arty, Gryffin, and Krewella.[7]

In 2019, Norris mixed and mastered tracks for Ascend, the third studio album by American DJ and producer Illenium.[7] The album peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.[13]

In 2020, Norris mixed 4 tracks for Miss Anthropocene, the fifth studio album by Canadian musician and producer Grimes, including the lead single, Violence.[7] The album peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart and at No. 32 on the Billboard 200.[14]

Norris is credited with mixing Lady Gaga's sixth studio album, Chromatica, including singles Stupid Love, Rain On Me featuring Ariana Grande, and Sour Candy featuring Blackpink.[15]
