Tirulokanathar Temple, Thakkalur

Tirulokanathar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the deity Shiva, located at Thakkalur in Puducherry, India.[1][2][3]

Vaippu Sthalam

The temple is one of the shrines of the Vaippu Sthalams sung by Tamil Saivite Nayanars Appar and Sundarar.[2]

Presiding deity

The presiding deity in the garbhagriha, represented by the lingam, is known as Tirulokanathar. The Goddess is known as Dharmasamvardhini.[1] Earlier they were called as Svetharanyar and Anandavalli. [2]

Specialities

The Lord Shiva could be found in many places. Among them are Idaimaruthu, Engoi, Ramacheram, Innambar, Emaperur, Thakkalur, Thalayalankadu, Kodumudi, Courtallam, Kollamputhur, Kottaru, and Kadambandurai. This is one of the such places. [3]

Structure

The temple does not have rajagopura. It has an entrance and a compound wall. After entering through the entrance east outer prakara, where nandhi and bali peeta are found. Through the inner entrance, the garbhagriha of the presiding deity could be reached. It is facing east, while the Goddess is facing south. The temple is found in a renovated condition.[3] The shrine of Nataraja, known as Nataraja Sabha is also found. [2] In the corner of the front mandapa, Bhairava and Chandra and in the outer prakara Vinayaka, Visvanathar and Gajalakshmi are found. [1]

Location

The temple is located in Mayiladuthurai-Peralam-Karaikkal, next to Tirunallar at a distance of 2 km. [2] It is opened for devotees from 9.00 am to 11.00. [3]
