Things Past (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)

"Things Past" is the 106th episode of the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the eighth episode of the fifth season. Sisko, Odo, Dax, and Garak are on an away mission when something happens. Bashir tries to care for their bodies, in a coma-like state, while we witness a shared experience of Terok Nor- Deep Space Nine during the Cardassian occupation about seven years before (although Jadzia Dax does state that it had to be at least 9 years very early in the episode).

"Things Past" received a Nielsen rating of 6.0 corresponding to 5,800,000 viewers, when it was shown on television in 1996.[1]

Plot

While returning from a conference on Bajor, a runabout piloted by Sisko, Odo, Dax and Garak encounters an unknown spatial anomaly. When the runabout arrives at the station, all four are discovered to be in a comatose state.

Meanwhile, Sisko, Odo, Jadzia and Garak find themselves years in the past, on Terok Nor during the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. They appear to have taken the identities of Bajorans, and are imprisoned after an assassination attempt is made on Gul Dukat. Odo, acting increasingly anxious and suspicious, finally reveals that the Bajorans everybody seems to think they are, are due to be executed after the attempt on Gul Dukat's life. They set about finding a way to stop this from happening.

However, inconsistencies soon pop up. Thrax, Odo's predecessor as chief of security, is present on the station, but Odo reveals that he, not Thrax, was Terok Nor's chief of security during the incident with the three Bajorans. Odo is eventually forced to reveal the truth: the evidence against the Bajorans was largely circumstantial, and Dukat simply wanted to make an example of them. Odo had later found out that the Bajorans were innocent; although he thought he had enough evidence for a conviction, he realized that if he had investigated further, he would have discovered the truth. He admitted that he cared more about the rule of law than justice, and he vowed never to do so again. They then wake in the infirmary, where Doctor Bashir reveals that the anomaly triggered a telepathic experience similar to the Great Link. The episode ends when a disappointed Kira Nerys asks if any other innocent people died under Odo's watch; he replies that he doesn't know and that he hopes not.

Reception

In 2019, Io9 said that "Things Past" was one of the best episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.[2]
