Sujan Chakraborty

Sujan Chakraborty (born 16 March 1959) is an Indian biomedical scientist and politician who is the leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He is currently the MLA of Jadavpur (Vidhan Sabha constituency). In the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections, he defeated his nearest rival, Minister for Power in the Government of West Bengal, Manish Gupta of the Trinamool Congress. He was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha representing Jadavpur constituency in West Bengal state. He presented research on a tumor marker at the International Cancer Research Institute in Greece in 1995.

Early life, education and personal life

Chakraborty was born on 16 March 1959 to Kanailal Chakraborty and Binapani Chakraborty at Kalikapur in South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal. He completed his graduation and post-graduation in the Pharmaceutical Engineering from Jadavpur University. Later, he earned his PhD In Pharmaceutical Engineering from the same university. On 15 December 1987, he married Mili Chakraborty.

Political career

Chakraborty was the editor of Chhatra Sangram (Students' Struggle), the Bengali organ of the state unit of the Students Federation of India from 1986-88. He was the secretary of the state unit of the organization from 1988–93 and general secretary of its central body from 1993-94. From 1996-2000 Chakraborty was a member of the state unit of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions. Later, he became a member of the General Council of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions.

Chakraborty was a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from 1998-2001. He was defeated by only 5 votes by Arup Bhadra of AITC. In 2004, he was elected to 14th Lok Sabha. He was a member of the Committee on Human Resource Development, Committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forests, Consultative Committee Ministry of Agro and Rural Industries and Ministry of Small Scale Industries, Committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forests (5 August 2007 onwards) in the 14th Lok Sabha.

In the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections, he defeated his nearest rival, Minister for Power in the Government of West Bengal, Manish Gupta of the Trinamool Congress from the Jadavpur (Vidhan Sabha constituency) seat by a margin of 13895 votes.

Social and administrative activities

Chakraborty is involved in various social and cultural activities like Paschimbanga Vignan Manch, and All India People's Science Network. He is associated with a number of clubs at district level. He has visited countries like Bangladesh, Cuba, France, Greece, UK and United States.

He was a member of the Court (Governing Body) of Jadavpur University from 1994-1998. He was the Chairman of the West Bengal Pharmaceutical and Photochemical Development Corporation Ltd, from 1996–2001, the Chairman of the Infusion India Ltd. from 1998–1999 and the Chairman of the West Bengal Rural Energy Development Corporation Ltd. from 1999-2004.

Awards and honors

Chakraborty was awarded the "Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy Gold Medal" for the year 1999-2000 by the University Grants Commission for outstanding contribution to Science.
