Realm (virology)

In virology, a realm is the highest taxonomic rank established by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV). A realm is divided into subrealms.[1] The names of virus realms are terminated with the suffix -viria.[2] For viroids the suffix is designated as -viroidia and for satellite nucleic acids as -satellitia,[2] but as of 2019 neither viroid nor satellite realms have been designated.

As of 2019, four realms are described: Duplodnaviria, Monodnaviria, Riboviria, and Varidnaviria.[3]

Subrealm

In virology, a subrealm is the second highest taxonomic rank established by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), after the realm. The names of subrealms for viruses are terminated with the suffix -vira. For viroid subrealms, the ending is -viroida and for satellites, -satellita.[2] A subrealm is divided into kingdoms.[1]
