It was released in the United Kingdom by Wichita Recordings and peaked at number five on the UK Singles Chart, their second highest-charting single to date, behind 2007's "The Prayer". It also reached number 31 in Ireland.

The US vinyl editions of "Silent Alarm" included a bonus 12" vinyl disc titled "Positive Tension"/"Price Of Gasoline". It contained remixes of "Positive Tension" and "Price Of Gasoline". The Blackbox remix of "Positive Tension" and the Automato remix of "Price Of Gasoline" would later be included on the remix album "Silent Alarm Remixed".
