It was announced in May 2018 that the next instalment of the G.I. Joe franchise would be a prequel, chronicling the origins of the character Snake Eyes.[3] In December, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura stated that Ray Park, who had played the character in the previous films, would not reprise his role for this film.[4] Robert Schwentke was set as director that same month.[5]

Casting

In August 2019, Henry Golding was cast to star in the title role, with Andrew Koji cast as Storm Shadow.[6][7] In September, Iko Uwais entered negotiations to join the film as Hard Master, and Úrsula Corberó was cast as Baroness.[8][9] Uwais was confirmed in October, with Haruka Abe, Samara Weaving and Takehiro Hira added to the cast.[10][11] Steven Allerick was announced as part of the cast in December.[12] On Golding's Instagram post, it shows that Peter Mensah with the cast as he joined the movie.[13][14]

Filming

Filming began on October 15, 2019 in Vancouver and was expected to continue until December 9.[15] Filming moved to Japan in January 2020.[16][17] Filming wrapped on February 26, 2020.[18]

Release

Snake Eyes is scheduled to be released on October 23, 2020.[19] It was delayed a week from an initial October 16 release,[20] as well as an originally slated March 27, 2020.[21]

Future

In May 2020, it was announced that a follow-up movie is in development, with a script co-written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse and Henry Golding will reprise his role as Snake Eyes. Lorenzo di Bonaventura will return as producer, while the project will be a joint-venture production between Paramount Pictures, Allspark Pictures, and Di Bonaventura Pictures.[22]
