Protagonists

Ikuto Tsumura (都村育人, Tsumura Ikuto)
Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae[2] (Japanese); Derick Snow (English)
Ikuto is the seventeen-year-old (later eighteen-year-old) male protagonist of the series and an aspiring fashion designer. Ikuto has aspired to be a fashion designer and self-taught himself since he was at least seven-year-old, but is forced put his dream on halt due to his financially struggling family. As the oldest child and only son, Ikuto helps his mother take care of his sisters and handles most of the housework and initially refuses to go college in lieu of full-time employment to support his sisters. After befriending Chiyuki and getting a part-time job at Yanagida's studio, Ikuto begins working towards his dream of being a fashion designer, though his financial situation causes him some setbacks. Despite not having any formal training or experience, Ikuto is very intuitive, hard-working, and a quick learner with a natural talent as a patternmaker. Ikuto's innate talent puts him on par with older aspiring fashion designers in the college-level Geika festival, though Ikuto is noted to have trouble with designing Haute couture by himself since he is used to making ready-to-wear clothes. While typically humble, polite, and mild-mannered, Ikuto gradually becomes more assertive, confident, less self-sacrificing, and develops a healthy ego as he becomes more involved in the fashion world. Ikuto has a special relationship with Chiyuki, crediting her as the reason for creating the opportunity that allowed him to pursue his dream, and their relationship is rooted in mutual feelings of kinship, respect, support, friendly rivalry, and romantic tension. After applying for an intern job at "Aphro I dite", Ikuto quickly distinguishes himself, rapidly climbing the ranks of the company and is eventually promoted to chief designer of the "Aphro I dite novice" branch.
Chiyuki Fujito (藤戸千雪, Fujito Chiyuki)
Voiced by: Yumiri Hanamori[2] (Japanese); Macy Anne Johnson (English)
Chiyuki is the seventeen-year-old female protagonist of the series and a model for her father's company "Mille Neige". While praised to be blessed with good looks, the proper body proportions, and her father's connections and wealth, Chiyuki lacks the minimum height requirement to be a runway model, being 158cm (5'2") tall. Despite this, Chyuki dreams of being in the Paris Fashion Week as the representative of her father's company and aims to be a top model, regardless of her short height and what other people thinks of her. Chiyuki is an energetic, charming, and strong-willed girl who speaks her mind and has a strong competitive spirit, especially when trying to prove her worth as a model to people that are dismissive of her. However, Chiyuki can also be pushy and selfish at times, though her stubborn and blunt nature can be a source of encouragement and motivation to people like Ikuto or Kokoro due their lack of confidence. Aside from being the first person outside his family to support his dream of being a fashion designer, Chiyuki serves as a source of knowledge for Ikuto to understand the fashion industry and is essentially Ikuto's de facto muse. Among the multifaceted aspects of her relationship with him, Ikuto's presence is a source of strength and hope for Chiyuki, as he is one of the few people that looks past her height to see her talent, and she is protective of him in return. As they gradually begin spending more time together, even becoming neighbors in the same apartment building, Chiyuki realizes she has romantic feelings for Ikuto. After participating in the Geika Festival as Kokoro's sole model, Chiyuki obtains some success working as an exclusive model for fashion magazine "Juvenile" and attracting more entertainment jobs, though she is indifferent to the latter.
Kokoro Hasegawa (長谷川心, Hasegawa Kokoro)
Voiced by: Ai Kayano[3], Dani Chambers (English)
Kokoro is a young aspiring, hard-working fashion designer, first-year student at the Geika Institute of Fashion, and part-time model at "Bon Rouge". Being 181cm (5'11") tall with a shy, submissive, and meek personality, Kokoro is rather self-conscious about her height, though she became less bothered by it when she was scouted in high school. Despite being talented as a model, Kokoro dislikes the nuances the job includes, but her feelings of debt towards her manager Igarashi and her lack of confidence prevents her from quitting. Upon befriending and working alongside Ikuto at Yanagida's studio, Kokoro gradually begins to be more courageous and challenging herself due his encouragement, though she is still prone to self-doubt and worries. During the Geika Festival, Kokoro and Chiyuki make a bet with Igarashi to let her quit modeling if Kokoro wins first place in the competition, which she does. Following her period abroad to study in Paris, Kokoro returns to Japan to work for Toh's upcoming brand. Kokoro greatly values her relationship with Ikuto and comes to realize she has romantic feelings for him.

Due to people downplaying his skills as Mai's heir to her company and his abilities far surpassing his peers, Toh is noted to always be alone, though he is friendly with many of his people. Upon noticing Ikuto's natural skills as a patterner, Toh takes a special interest in him and even tries to recruit into working for him, though Ikuto rejects his offer. After going independent, Toh begins building up his brand as he continues to compete against his grandmother.

A fair yet practical man, he has great faith in Chiyuki's talent as a model, but he never shows her any favoritism and even fired her once for throwing tantrums after she stopped growing taller, but he starts to openly support her again when she got rehired. While very strict, fearsome, and not afraid to be a little devious to achieve her goal in making Kokoro successful, Igarashi puts in a lot of effort in nurturing Kokoro during their time together and eventually honors the bet of letting Kokoro quit after she wins the Geika festival. Ever since 8 years ago, now 18-year-old Chiyuki Fujito has pursued her dream of becoming a top model representing her father's Mille Niege Modelling Agency, aiming to walk the runway at Paris Fashion Week one day. However, her growth spurt quickly stopped when she was 10 years old and ever since that day, she has stayed at that height, way below the 175cm mark necessary for models. Even so, she resolves not to give up. In class, she gets to know the shy boy Ikuto Tsumura after he forgets to hand in his post-graduation plans, but inadvertently discovers his talent for clothes-designing and dream to become a fashion designer, although he has chosen to give up because of his family's poor circumstances. After telling Ikuto of the impossibility of his dream, Chiyuki beats herself down for discouraging someone and tries for another agency, getting accepted, but ultimately decides to renew her initial dream instead, approaching Ikuto to design clothes for her from her old ones. Chiyuki once again declares her convictions in front of the judges, including top model Shizuku Naruoka, who catches a glimpse of Paris from her aura and appearance. Chiyuki is finally accepted, and she cries with joy over becoming a member of the agency that shares the same meaning as her name, as "Mille Niege" in French means "thousand snow". On the street in front of the agency, Chiyuki has her photo taken and a top model named Seira publishes it, earning the two instant fame. Ikuto is then let into the agency after Chiyuki's father wishes to buy the design of her outfit.

Chiyuki's father takes back the offer for Ikuto after realising that he isn't professionally trained. Chiyuki returns the clothes Ikuto gave her, saying that she has no need to wear clothes from a no-name designer out loud in an attempt to spur him to prove her wrong just like how she did for the many others that discouraged her, only for it to backfire instead and he lashes out at her. Thankfully, they make up and Ikuto makes a new outfit for himself to try again at Mille Niege. Chiyuki's father acknowledges Ikuto's potential, but instead of hiring him recommends him to the designing business of one of their old professional designers Hajime Yanagida to get some experience first. Although Mr. Yanagida is crass and egoistic, Ikuto is inspired time and time again by Chiyuki to not leave the studio and continually improves his work. The next day is Tokyo Fashion Week, and a crucial moment for Mr. Yanagida as a top designer, but his last model has to be replaced by Chiyuki instead after she was unable to make it. Things go even more wrong as Kumi Moriyama, his sole dressmaker, collapses from a nosebleed and lack of sleep, prompting Ikuto to volunteer himself to alter the dress to fit Chiyuki's height.

Ikuto blanks out from the pressure of shouldering the Yanagida brand and the use of unfamiliar cloth and needles. As Chiyuki pulls him up to encourage him again, he realises that she too, like him, is afraid of the professional world and its demands, but is nevertheless fighting for her own dream. With 13 minutes before going out, Ikuto uses unconventional methods to bring the dress together to complement Chiyuki's perfect figure and powerful stage presence, receiving support from the other models to buy a little more time as well as they slow their movements on the runway. The audience is set abuzz when seeing a short model on the runway. Chiyuki risks embarrassing herself further when she crouches down as the shoemaker had accidentally used a broken heel, but is saved by Ikuto purposely not tying off the last thread of her neckline, making the dress billow out and shapeshift to look completely natural. The thought of Ikuto changing her dress without her notice brings a smile onto her face, although models are always taught never to fall or smile on the runway. Despite that, it earns her the tremendous applause of the audience and Chiyuki finishes perfectly, changing her gait to return backstage in her broken shoes. As the fitter points out their flaws, the two resolve to improve and return here with their own brand. Mr. Yanagida acknowledges Ikuto's potential and decides to train him up.

After pulling an all-nighter at Mr. Yanagida's, Honoka, Ikuto's studious oldest younger sister, mistakenly believes that he is working for their sakes again. The guilt of having to rely on her brother giving up his dream to attain her own, coupled with her falling grades, causes her to lash out in anger at him. They reconcile when Ikuto assures her that he is chasing his own dream while getting paid for the family, the two promising to work hard together. As Mr. Yanagida secures a place in a department store for his brand, the high demand for dresses prompts him to find additional support from two members of the famous Geika Fashion School in Japan, the top designer Mei Ayano's grandson Toh Ayano, and model-cum-designer freshman Kokoro Hasegawa. Because of the dress's unique material and fitting, Ikuto struggles with it while Toh performs it effortlessly, although the latter realises Ikuto's great potential and talent amidst his imperfections from lack of skill and experience. At the end of the day, Toh asks Mr. Yanagida privately if he can have Ikuto for his own brand.

As the trains are delayed, Kokoro and Ikuto wait it out at a park bench. Kokoro reveals that she originally wanted to become a model, but was inspired by Ms. Ayano at her first fashion show to enroll at Geika and try for fashion designing. Ikuto attends a lecture at Geika to participate in their school's upcoming fashion show in exchange for two of their students' help at Mr. Yanagida's. Ikuto decides to try for the grand prize: an opportunity to study in Paris and support from the school to launch one's own brand. Outside the school, he witnesses a confrontation between Kokoro and her manager Yu Igarashi, later which Kokoro confesses in tears how she was made the target of bullying and discouragement due to her naturally beautiful body and height during her modelling career, and her aspirations for designing had likely stemmed from that as well as Ms. Ayano's inspiration. Ikuto, recalling how the principal of Geika Shōko Takaoka had stressed on Kokoro's great desire to learn, proposes to work together for the school fashion show and prove her manager wrong. For the preliminaries, Ikuto has to design a "stylish outfit" that can fit the model Seira within an hour, and sew it up for a model doll in two days. Consulting Chiyuki with help about Seira, who conquered all odds and achieved celebrity fame even with her 171cm short height for runway models, he eventually finds inspiration in Chiyuki's appearance.

Chiyuki expresses her admiration for Ikuto to her friends, respecting him for how he finds the determination to juggle between balancing his dream and family circumstances, and notes how she views him as both a rival and friend. During the judging for the preliminaries, Ms. Takaoka, Toh, and two other contestants are chosen as judges each round. Ikuto presents an unconventional design of pajamas, recalling how Seira wanted to "look stylish all the time" and thought about doing loungewear for her to post on social media, unlike her going-out clothes she normally posts. Although Toh is impressed with Ikuto's improvement in the stitchwork, he calls it lame, causing Ikuto to crumble under worry. However, he picks himself back up when he recalls Chiyuki's approval of his work, and submits it without editing anything. Ms. Takaoka reveals that the true test was to believe in one's design, as it is most important for the designer to believe in his/her work. The judges then reveal the top three designs that will move straight to the finals, one of which is Ikuto's and another a fellow rival's that seems to hold much animosity towards him: Kaoru Kizaki. Toh breaks the hard truth that Ikuto only got third place because he skimped on the fabric, and that he will need much more money to purchase fabric for the finals, offering him to work under his brand which Ikuto accepts. Meanwhile, Chiyuki struggles to find magazines to accept her, eventually coming to MODE JAPAN after her performance at Mr. Yanagida's show had inspired a fashion editor Fumiyo Niimura there. However, Niimura is replaced by an Akasaka instead, who only accepts Chiyuki after a model drops out last minute. At the dressing room Chiyuki meets Kokoro and immediately becomes envious of her height and beauty.
7"Aura"

February 21, 2020 (2020-02-21)
Chiyuki recalls how Shizuku taught her of the most important thing in modelling: aura, projected from one's figure and confidence. Despite being only a supporting model, she determines to show off her good qualities amidst her other supporting models and Kokoro as the main. Chiyuki fights against putting down Kokoro when the latter has cuts on her hands — a basic mistake models cannot make — but fails when she overhears Kokoro telling Yu that she wants to quit modelling. Despite Chiyuki lashing out at her, Kokoro persists in her dream to design clothes instead of model. Yu recalls how she had cozied her way up as a former model, modelling alongside Shizuku, and was friends with Chiyuki's photographer Miwako. Yu realises that she treats Chiyuki unfairly and persists with Kokoro becoming a model because of her own sense of inferiority she felt competing in an industry she had little talent for compared to others. Kokoro is once again conflicted with her choices when she makes a beginner's mistake at Mr. Yanagida's, but she is let in after much begging and Ikuto defending her. Ikuto visits Toh's basement studio and understands his aspirations of wanting to surpass his grandmother. He concludes that he enjoys designing more than making clothes and resolves to become a fully-fledged fashion designer instead of a pattern-maker.

The finals' theme is revealed to be the Japanese character "wa", where anything associated with the character is allowed, and designers are allowed to use models by the school or have their own, with Ikuto planning to ask Chiyuki. However, Ikuto is alerted to his mother falling into critical condition after being repeatedly in and out of the hospital, possibly orphaning him and his siblings for good. Ikuto realises that his mother was holding back her operation so he could have enough money for fabric for the Geika Fashion Show, forcing him to choose between his family and his own dream as Toh tries to use his pattern-making skills, and Yu tries to bribe him into influencing Kokoro to give up her own designing aspirations. Ikuto finally breaks when he lashes out at his second youngest sister Aoi. He meets with President Fujito, who was informed by Mr. Yanagida by Kokoro of Ikuto's financial circumstance, persisting in his offer to buy the design he made for Chiyuki for 2 million yen, in return for comforting his daughter for not getting any magazine offers even in Paris. A grateful Ikuto asks that Chiyuki star as a model for his collection at Geika, to which she accepts.

Chiyuki tells Ikuto about her experiences with Kokoro, although it is only later when they witness another confrontation between her and Yu do the three realise that they all know one another. Ikuto tells Chiyuki that he plans his show's theme to be about "wind", describing how a typhoon is strongest at its smallest centre, much like how she is strong despite her short height. However, things change for all of them when Chiyuki, recalling how Ikuto places faith in Kokoro's hard work and real conviction to be a designer, decides to become a model for Kokoro's show instead as a "handicap" to prove to Yu that if Kokoro can win first place with her supposedly mediocre designing skills and a short model, she can become a designer. Chiyuki then declares that her and Ikuto are officially rivals and resolve to do their best. Now without Chiyuki, Ikuto has to redo all his designs to be good enough to fight against Kokoro and most of all, Toh. Ikuto's ill and hospitalised mother promises him that the entire family will go watch his show. At Geika, Ikuto announces to Toh that he will prove him wrong and invites Ryūnosuke Eda, Kaoru's childhood friend who specialises in men's clothing, to help him out with his new theme of "harmony (chou-wa)" — which is also Toh's theme, turning things into a head-on fight. Utilising experience from Mr. Yanagida, Ryūnosuke's help and his own creativity, Ikuto heads to the show.
