The force was the subject of an episode of ITV documentary Police Camera Action!, made in October 1998.

The state police office is organised into nine police directorates:

  • The Police Directorate Kiel, responsible for Kiel and the district of Plön. Subordinated are a district police inspection in Kiel and a Kriminalpolizeistelle in Kiel with a Kriminalpolizeiausstelle in Plön (2012); a police district in Kiel; four police stations in Kiel with 12 subordinate police stations; five police central stations with 11 subordinate police stations in Lütjenburg (2), Plön (1), Preetz (3), Schwentinenthal-Raisdorf (3) and Schönberg (Holstein) (2).
  • The Police Directorate Lübeck, responsible for Lübeck and the district Ostholstein. Organised into a district criminal inspection and criminal police in Lübeck and Eutin and three criminal police outposts in Bad Schwartau, Oldenburg/H. and Neustadt/H.; two police district districts in Lübeck and Eutin; four police stations in Lübeck with subordinate eight police stations; Six police central stations with subordinate 17 police stations in Bad Schwartau/Timmendorfer beach (4) (merged 2016), Burg auf Fehmarn (2), Eutin (3), Heiligenhafen (3), Neustadt in Holstein (3) and Oldenburg in Holstein (2); a police highway area in Scharbeutz.
  • The Police Directorate Itzehoe, responsible for Kreis Steinburg and Kreis Dithmarschen. Organised into a district criminal inspection in Itzehoe and two criminal police stations in Itzehoe and Heide as well as Kriminalpolizeiausstelle in Brunsbüttel; two police district districts in Itzehoe and Heide; a police station in Itzehoe with two police stations; ten police central stations with subordinate 21 police stations in Glueckstadt (3), Kellinghusen (4), Wilster (6), Brunsbüttel, castle, Büsum (1), Heide (3), Lunden (2), Marne (2) and Meldorf.
  • The Police Directorate Flensburg responsible for Flensburg and the district of Schleswig-Flensburg and the entire area of North Frisia. Organised into a district criminal inspection in Flensburg and a subordinate criminal police station in Schleswig; two police district districts in Flensburg and Schleswig; two police stations in Flensburg with eight subordinate police stations; six police central stations with 17 subordinate police stations in Glücksburg (4), Kappeln (3), Harrislee (3), Kropp (3), Schleswig (1) and Tarp (3); a police highway area in Schleswig, the police station Husum, responsible for Kreis Nordfriesland. A Kriminalpolizeistelle Husum with Kriminalpolizeiausstellen in Niebüll and Westerland/Sylt; a police district in Husum with branch office in Niebüll; eight police central stations with subordinate 19 police stations in Bredstedt (1), Friedrichstadt (6), Husum (1), Leck (1), Niebüll (3), Tönning (2), Westerland (4) and Wyk a.F.   • The Police Directorate Bad Segeberg, responsible for Kreis Segeberg and Kreis Pinneberg. Organised into two criminal police stations in Bad Segeberg and Pinneberg with each Kriminalpolizeiaustellen in Norderstedt and Elmshorn; two police highway and district districts in Bad Segeberg and Pinneberg; six police stations with subordinate 22 police stations in Norderstedt (2), Elmshorn (2), Pinneberg (2), Rellingen (3), Wedel (5) and Bad Segeberg (8); three police headquarters with 8 subordinate police stations in Bad Bramstedt (2), Henstedt-Ulzburg (4) and Kaltenkirchen (2); a police highway area in Elmshorn.
  • The Police Directorate Ratzeburg, responsible for Kreis Lauenburg and Kreis Stormarn. Organised into two criminal police stations in Ratzeburg and Bad Oldesloe with respective Kriminalpolizeiaustellen in Geesthacht and Ahrensburg and Reinbek; two police district districts in Ratzeburg and Bad Oldesloe; 10 police central stations with 23 subordinate police stations in Geesthacht (2), Lauenburg (1), Mölln (2), Ratzeburg (5), Schwarzenbek (3), Bad Oldesloe (2), Ahrensburg (2), Bargteheide (3), Reinbek (1) and Glinde (2); two police highway areas in Bad Oldesloe and Mölln.
  • The Police Directorate Neumünster, responsible for the city of Neumünster and the district Rendsburg-Eckernförde. Organised into two criminal police stations in Neumünster and Rendsburg with Kriminalpolizeiausstelle in Eckernförde; a police district in Rendsburg with connected traffic accident service based in Neumünster; a police traffic monitoring service in Neumünster; three police stations in Neumünster (2) and Rendsburg (1) with five or eight subordinate police stations; six police central stations with subordinate 17 police stations in Bordesholm (2), Eckernförde (6), Gettorf (3), Hohenwestedt (2), Kronshagen (1) and Nortorf (3); a police highway area in Neumünster.
  • The police department for training and for the riot police (PD AFB) persists after § 5 POG with seat in Eutin as lower Land authority. The task of this police department is the education and training of the employees of the state police; as far as they are not trained at legally independent educational institutions. The riot police support the authorities and police departments when it is necessary to perform their duties. For this purpose, there is the organizational structure of the specialist management.
  • The specialist inspection training with three training areas, the department of general education and the professional ethics group,

  • The riot police, which, according to the Administrative Agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Land of Schleswig-Holstein, comprises a leadership group, three Einsatzhundschaften, a technical task force and a unit for securing and arresting evidence. If required, it supports the individual police service with its units and special command and control equipment supplied by the federal government.
  • There are 6 water protection police stations in Husum, Brunsbüttel, Flensburg, Kiel, Heiligenhafen and Lübeck-Travemünde with 12 subordinate water protection police stations.
