Saskatchewan Highway Patrol

The Saskatchewan Highway Patrol is a Provincial Peace Officer agency in the Province of Saskatchewan tasked with rural highway traffic enforcement and supporting the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with rural policing.

Duties

The primary duties of the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol include, but are not limited to:

Enforcing transportation legislation, policies and agreements for all motor vehicles. Checking all vehicle operators for licensing, certification and insurance. Inspecting commercial vehicles for safety, weights and dimensions, permits and registrations. Laying charges, appearing in court, conducting investigations and preparing reports. Educating drivers and companies about legal requirements. Working shift work, including evenings and weekends. Travel away from home detachment to participate in training, re-certification or enforcement events in other detachments is required. Officers are also members of the Protection and Response Team and have arrest and detention powers.

Other duties include:

Responding or backing-up other law enforcement agencies on 911 calls. Investigating impaired drivers, thefts, crimes in progress and more. Enforcing speed limits and other traffic violations – inside and outside of work zones. Responding to motor vehicle accidents and erratic driving complaints. Taking action when federal and provincial offences are committed.
