Storyline

Manav Deb Mukherjee's childhood is spent in a wealthy home where his father, Umakant Pradeep Kumar, is an alcoholic, and his motherSulochana Latkar a simple housewife, who tries in vain to get his dad to give up on alcohol. This results in differences between his parents, leading to their separation, and him leaving the house to be with his mother. Manav grows up as a cynic, and this cynicism increases when he goes to live with a foster and a very wealthy family. He marries Hiralal's daughter, Sandhya, and both love each other deeply. But things do not seem to go Manav's way at all, as he is separated from Sandhya, and after several months finds out that Hirala is about to get Sandhya married - again. Now Manav has changed his name, and is being helped by an unknowing Umakant to try and salvage, what possibly remains, of the rest of this bitter and lonely life. Ultimately, the turn of events lead to a positive end.[1]

The film's music composed by O.P.Nayyar, lyrics were written by Kavi Pradeep.[2] The film's songs chal akela, chal akela and andhere mein jo baithe hain became very famous, and chal akela chal akela has a near-anthem status, and considered as one of O.P.Nayyar's most memorable compositions, and also as singer Mukesh's most famous songs. O.P.Nayyar recalled that despite Mukesh's request 'chal akela, chal akela' was finalized and okayed in its first take, for recording. Another song sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Hemant Kumar Kisi se ab mera, though 7.30 minutes long, has a high emotional content, being an ode to a demised mother. This was a period when O.P.Nayyar wasn't engaging Mohammed Rafi as a singer, and instead he used Hemant Kumar as playback for Pradeep Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor as playback for Deb Mukherjee and Mukesh for chal akela chal akela and all these singers did justice with their songs, for which O.P.Nayyar scored outstanding music. In a Vividh Bharati channel programme of All India Radio (VBS - UJALE UNKI YAADON KE- DAASTANE O P NAYYAR- PART- 5), the film's composer O.P.Nayyar mentioned that because of its strong and emotional storyline, music and songs, the most famous being Chal Akela Chal Akela, it had silver jubilee run wherever it was released. O.P.Nayyar further recalled that Kavi Pradeep, who wrote songs for the film cried on hearing the songs composed by him, and further described Kavi Pradeep as an incomparable poet.[3]
