Sagesse SC (football)

Sagesse Sports Club, or Hekmeh Club Beirut (Arabic: نادي الحكمة بيروت‎, lit. 'Wisdom Club Beirut') in Arabic, is a Lebanese football club based in the Achrafieh district of Beirut.[2]

The club was founded in 1943 under the patronage of Father Boulos Kik, supported by Mgr. Jean Maroun. Although trophyless, Sagesse came second twice in a row in the Lebanese Premier League, in 2001 and 2002, and were finalists in both the Lebanese FA Cup, in 2006, and the Lebanese Federation Cup, in 2004. The club is mostly known for its basketball program.[3]

History

Sagesse took part in the Lebanese Premier League in 1944, but were relegated to the Second Division in 1945, before winning it in 1948 to gain back promotion to the First Division. After two years they were relegated back again to Division 2 in 1950. After becoming champions of Division 2 yet again in 1956, the club returned to Division 1 and played in the top League until 1991. During most of that period Lebanese football was at its peak and Sagesse played friendlies against many notable clubs from around the world, demonstrating a good image of football in Lebanon. In 2006, Sagesse reached the final of the Lebanese Cup but lost against the cup holder Ansar 1-3.[4]
