Ruth Chao (designer)

Ruth Chao (Chinese: 趙于汶; pinyin: Zhào Yúwén; born in 1988), is a creative director and graphic artist in Hong Kong.[1] She has been awarded Prestige's 40 under 40 and Perspective’s 40 under 40, is an Ambassador of Design of Hong Kong, is one of the up-and-coming designers in the global scene and is the youngest creative directors ever to lead a team in winning the Berlin Red Dot Awards.

Education

Ruth Chao earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Bristol.

Career

Ruth Chao launched her career in the world of design at British Vogue, trained under the notable Robin Derrick and the now-creative director Jaime Perlman.[2] Upon her return to Hong Kong, she continued to hone her skills at Lane Crawford and I.T Apparels, where she designed for multiple brands and institutions, from Maison Martin Margiela to Isbabel Marant, ACNE, Victoria Beckham, The Met Gala, and Stella McCartney, as well as working with the Oscar-nominated art director, William Chang Suk Ping. This exposure to different realms of design has inspired an all-rounded dimension to her work.[3]

In 2014, Ruth Chao and her partner Antonia Li, co-founded INDICUBE, a dynamic creative agency based in Hong Kong.[4] As the Creative Director, Chao leads the team to provide a range of creative services, including brand identity, graphic design, website/app design and development.[5] In the recent years since its founding, she has worked with numerous clients spanning many industries and countries, including Estée Lauder, Mr Porter, New World Development, Hong Kong Jockey Club, Hypebeast, Tod's, MGM and Mandarin Oriental.[6]

In 2016, she won a series of six international design awards, and is one of the youngest creative directors ever to lead a team in winning the Red Dot Awards. She is amongst Hong Kong Tatler's Generation T,[7] is an Ambassador of Design of Hong Kong, is also their Art Director of Graphics of 2015.[8]
