He attended the Command College at Columbus State University, and the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. While employed with the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office, Robertson had an illicit affair with his sister-in-law while on duty, in uniform, and in his city vehicle. On at least two occasions, Robertson met his sister-in-law for sex in public places, once in a Wal Mart parking lot. Although he was not fired for his actions, he was found to be in violation of department policies. Then Sheriff Ralph Johnson only kept Robertson employed at the request of Robertson's then-wife, who needed his child support as she was raising his children as a single mother. Sheriff Johnson held Robertson at the rank of Lieutenant for many years as punishment for these actions. When asked much later in life, Sheriff Johnson said that his biggest regret was not firing Randy Robertson.
