Régiment de La Marine

The Régiment de La Marine was an infantry regiment of the Kingdom of France created in 1635, later being designated as 11th Infantry Regiment (French: 11e Régiment d'infanterie)

  • September 26, 1636 : creation of the Régiment Cardinal-Duc by Cardinal Richelieu
  • 1636 : re-designated as Régiment de La Marine
  • March 25, 1776 : redoubled, the 2nd and 4th battalions formed the Régiment d'Auxerrois (1776) (French: Régiment d’Auxerrois)
  • January 1, 1791 : re-designated as 11th Line Infantry Regiment
  • October 22, 1793 : the 1st battalion was reformed by incorporation to the 21st Battle Dem-Brigade (French: 21e demi-brigade de bataille) during the formation of the demi-brigade
  • 1793 : reformation of the 2nd battalion being incorporated to the 22nd Battle Demi-Brigade (French: 22e demi-brigade) during the formation of the demi-brigade

Campaign and battles

The French regiment was created by Richelieu, in 1635. The regiment was part of numerous regiments of the monarchy whose mission was to serve on board naval vessels and in the colonies. While these line infantry regiments were transferred in 1791, they historically are considered the ancestors of regiments composing the marine infantry (French: infanterie de marine) :
