He has directed hundreds of advertising commercials. His work has been recognized by international award shows including Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and Clio Awards.
He is also the director, writer and editor of the Netflix's Indian original, Taj Mahal 1989[1]. The project was produced by Viacom's Tipping Point and executed by Flying Saucer. In May 2020, his debut feature film Ghoomketu released on the ZEE5's streaming platform after a delay of several years. It was produced by Phantom Films and Sony Pictures and was acquired by ZEE5 in 2020.[2][3]
Early life
Pushpendra Nath Misra was born in Lucknow, India. He studied in Lucknow before he went on to join National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad in 1992. Post his graduation he worked for Grey Worldwide, an advertising agency, for more than a year.
Advertising
In 2004, Pushpendra Nath Misra founded his own production house in Mumbai called Flying Saucer which produces television commercials and has since diversified into web series and feature films. He has directed a wide range of advertising films. His work includes directing campaign such as ‘Dr. Bhattavdekar’ of Orbit White, Set Max’s ‘Sheesha’, Sahara India’s ‘Gabbar Singh’, ‘Ek Sawaal’ for Kaun Banega Crorepati, ‘Paise Bolta Hai’ for Reserve Bank of India, ‘Ek Kidney’ for Yatra.com, ‘Love Marriage’ for Brooke Bond and ‘Lag Gaye’ for Candyman.
In 2015, he directed a spot titled ‘A video appeal to Cannes Lions jury members.’ which made an appeal to call out the fake campaigns during the award season. The ad film was recognized at major award shows including Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, Clio Awards, ADFEST, Spikes Asia, Kyoorius and Abby Awards. Another ad film in the same campaign titled ‘The Case Video Must Go on’ also garnered public attention and won awards.
Web Series
Pushpendra Nath Misra directed his maiden web series Taj Mahal 1989 which was also written and edited by him. The plot is set in and around Lucknow University in 1989. Taj Mahal 1989 follows the intersecting lives of a Lucknow University professor couple, their students, a long-lost friend and his lover, and a schoolgirl in love with an older boy. Through the daily struggles and triumphs of the characters, the series explores the different shades of love over the ages as it mutates and matures.
The web show premiered on Netflix on 14 February 2020 and opened to largely positive response from media and public.[4] [5] [6] [7]
Feature Film
Pushpendra Nath Misra shot his debut feature film Ghoomketu in 2014 which was produced by Phantom Films and Sony Pictures and starred Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the titular role. The theatrical release was slated for November 2018 but due to financial troubles and inability to find ideal distributors the film release was delayed for years. In May 2020 it was acquired by Zee5 and released on their streaming platform instead of a theatrical release due to COVID-19 pandemic in India.
