In 1982, Preap Sovath and his mother moved to Phnom Penh. His mother sent him to high school and eventually graduated in 1991. He pursued a Bachelor of Law and Economics at the University of Economics. He applied for military service in 1992 and joined the army at the Political Bureau, learned financial equipment, and joined the state-run Treasury Department.

Sovath's career as a singer started in the 1990s when he joined the army and became a political commissar. He worked during the daytime and sang at restaurants or bars at nighttime.

He sang with Touch Sunnix for a year, from 1995 to 1996, and released his first song. The first two songs—Oun Min Men Songsa (អូនមិនមែនសង្សា) and Som Oy Pit Doch Veacha (សូមឱ្យពិតដូចវាចា)—was a success. After the popularity of the two songs, he joined one of the largest productions in Cambodia—Reaksmey Hang Meas Production—in 1997. He released his first solo album—His Life and His Excellence—with Him Sivorn, and becoming the lead singer of Raksmey Hang Meas. Most of his songs were in CDs & Karaoke VCDs.

His second track, "Heartbreak (ហែកបេះដូង)", was Cambodia's most famous love song of 2003. The song was a cover of the Thai song, and the popularity made him one of the top singers in Cambodia. [1]
