History

Established in 1957 in Falmouth, it moved to its present location in 1961, and attained Sports College status in 1998, the seventeenth school to do so.[3][4] A new £26 million building, completed in September 2008, has replaced the original block.[5]

On 1 July 2011, Penryn College formally gained academy status.

Academic standards

After a disappointing set of exam results and a progress mark placing them second from bottom in the county league tables, Its latest Ofsted rating was grade 10 (Very Bad), a backwards step from the previous grade 6 (ok).[6] and the school has a "leading edge" designation from the Department for Children, Schools and Families.[3] Penryn College was listed as one of the hundred most deprived schools by the Department for Education and Employment; other achievements include a South West Education Business Partnership Award, runner-up in the national "Family of Schools" Award, and the Sportsmark.[7]
