Academics

Orono High School has been praised on numerous occasions for its academic excellence. Orono High School students generally test very high on standardized tests. Students have access to many unique classes, like classes in robotics, psychology, practical law, or forensics. They also have access to small robots and 3D printers in the Library.[2]

Extracurriculars

Orono High School has many interesting clubs and activities including: Student Ambassadors, Art Club, Chess Club, the fall musical, French Club, Spanish Club, Geek Squad, Jazz Band, Key Club, Math Team, National Honors Society, Newspaper, the One-Act Play, Speech & Debate, Student Council, Show Choir, Environmental Club, Book Club, Science Club, and Riot Buddies.[3]

Art/Music Classes

Orono High School offers many art and music classes including: AP Studio Art, Digital Art, Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Art Fundamentals I and II, Ukulele, Beginner's Acting, Beginner's Strings, Concert Choir, Band, and Orchestra.[4]

Sports are a big part of life at Orono High School. 87% of students are involved in sports.[4]

Fall Sports

Orono High School has long been known for its sports teams. In the fall the school offers football, field hockey, golf, soccer, cheering, and cross country. The school has had a fairly successful history in all of these sports. In 1932 the football team went undefeated and underscored upon.[5] Orono's football program is one of the most prestigious in the state, winning 14 state championships throughout their history. The Cross Country team won the girls state championship in 2013. In 2008, 2009 and 2013, the girls soccer team won the Eastern Maine Class C Championship. The Red Riots boys soccer team went to 5 straight Eastern Maine championship games throughout 2008-2013.

Winter Sports

In the winter Orono High School offers swimming, skiing, indoor track and field, hockey, cheering, and basketball. Orono's basketball teams have had success throughout their history, winning 7 state championships in boys basketball and 2 in girls basketball. The Orono High School Hockey team had a long-standing tradition of honor and pride before folding due to numbers in 2013, later combining with Old Town high school. Orono also has an excellent cheerleading program. The Orono Chess team, chess's sports hood admittedly being suspect, was the 2017 state champion with an almost perfect score. In the year following John Bapst Highschool, a competitor for the state championships, head chess coach was heard saying, "Orono, they're unbeatable." The OHS show choir was also very successful after winning the Division two state championship for four years in a row.[6]

Spring Sports

In the spring Orono High School offers baseball, softball, track and field, canoeing, and tennis. Orono's boys and girls track and field teams won the state championship in 1986. The girls have won the state championship multiple times in recent years, having won in 2012, 2013, and 2015. Orono's baseball team won the state championship in 2017 under Don Joseph.
