November 2018 Kabul attack

A suicide bombing occurred on Tuesday 20 November 2018 in the city of Kabul. The Afghan Health Ministry announced that over 50 people were killed and 94 were wounded. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but suspicion falls on the Islamic State. [1]

Attack

The attack took place in a wedding hall, where religious scholars were gathering to celebrate Prophet Muhammad's birthday.[2] Some thousand were said to be at the event, the bomber made his way into the event where he detonated his explosives. [3] It is unknown who committed the bombing but it is believed ISIS committed the attack due to their success in Afghanistan.[4]

Reaction

The United Nations condemned the attack, calling it an atrocity.[2] The Taliban also condemned the attack, stating "our men were not involved in the Kabul blast and we condemn the loss of human lives".[5] President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack and stated "a crime against Islam and humanity.”[6]
