In January 2008 the Australian Communications and Media Authority allocated a broadcasting licence for 100.9 MHz to Peedac Pty Ltd. The callsign 6NME refers to the initials of Noongar Media Enterprises, a Peedac subsidiary.[1] The station's intended market is the local indigenous community and those interested in indigenous culture.[1][2][3][4]

Noongar Radio is a member of IRCA, NIRS and the CBAA.

Staff

Jeff Michael is the broadcaster of Drive from 2009 to present. Michael was also a previous staff member of WAAMA Michael is both music director and program manager at Noongar Radio. Jeremy Garlett, the first broadcaster on Aboriginal radio in Western Australia (see 6AR) has a message of "mind, body, spirit, change" in his show "Afternoons With Jeremy Garlett". Garlett is also the station's community engagement officer. Since August 2019, Mark Patrick has been the producer and host of the Breakfast show.

Paul Whitton (Faure) was appointed station manager following Wayne Bynder's resignation in 2015.

Awards

In 2017 Noongar Radio was finalist for three CBAA awards winning "Excellence in Indigenous Engagement" and "Outstanding Contribution to Australian Music" for PHIL Walley-Stack's Show "Indigenous Beats".

In 2016 and 2017 Noongar Radio was Runner Up for NAIDOC Perth “Business of the Year”.

Noongar Radio has been lauded on the floor of Western Australian parliament as an "awesome radio station".

Programming

Noongar Radio broadcasts a diversity of programming for the community in which it is licensed to serve. This includes:

  • The award-winning “Indigenous Beats” with Phil Walley-Stack
  • "Strong Minds", a nationally syndicated mental health program; Host producer and researcher Mark Patrick
  • "Inside Out", addressing Western Australia's high incarceration rates by connecting those on the inside with their loved ones on the outside
  • "Hospital Hotline", a request program combating the isolation of those from outside the community in Perth for medical treatment
  • "Law Matters", produced in association with the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia
  • "Health Matters", closing the gap in Indigenous health in partnership with the Western Australian Department of Health
  • "Rainbow KINnection", dedicated to the Noongar LGBTQI community
  • Smash Crew" Saturday morning sports and live WAFL sports coverage
  • "Gospel Celebration", for the large Noongar Christian community
  • "Deadly Country", Noongar Radio's own country music program
  • "Motown Getdown" with the iconic Pappa J
  • "Our Voices", an Indigenous issues program,
  • "National Talkblack", via NIRS
  • The "Mary G Show" live weekly from Broome
