The municipality covers an area of 25.47 square kilometres (9.83 sq mi), and has a population of 3,293 (as at 28 August 2006).

Nivnice lies approximately 17 kilometres (11 mi) south-east of Uherské Hradiště, 29 km (18 mi) south of Zlín, and 264 km (164 mi) south-east of Prague.

The village is one of the locations speculated to be the birthplace of Jan Amos Komenský.
