History (Netherlands)

Nickelodeon replaced a similar-themed channel, Kindernet in 2003 after the channel was acquired by Viacom by the end of 2001.[3] Nickelodeon started as a program block between 1 PM and 3 PM on Kindernet in the Netherlands in February 2002.[4][5]

In the course of 2003 Nickelodeon is getting a prominent place in the programming of Kindernet. On 14 July 2003 Nickelodeon launched as a 24-hours channel.[6] By then Kindernet was degraded as a program block in the morning and was turned into Nick Jr.. The Nick Jr. website also replaced Kindernet's website.[7][1]

In 2005, Nickelodeon closed as a 24-hours channel. It began time-sharing with a new Dutch television channel Talpa on 1 August 2005. Nickelodeon aired between 6 AM and 6 PM.[8] By the end of 2006 MTV's deal with Talpa ended and Nickelodeon moved to The Box Comedy on 1 December.[9] Nickelodeon extended its airtime till 8 PM and The Box Comedy changed into Comedy Central on 30 April 2007.[10]

Comedy Central switched to TMF on 1 January 2011. As of 14 February 2011 Nickelodeon became a 24-hours channel again.[11] On 21.00 hour Nickelodeon becomes TeenNick which broadcasts original versions of the series with Dutch subtitles, TeenNick stops on approximately 5.00 AM. After that normal Nickelodeon broadcast again. All content on normal Nickelodeon is Dutch dubbed, except Dutch/Flemish productions.

A high-definition simulcast of Nickelodeon would launch through UPC Netherlands on 3 April 2012. But was delayed due to technical problems.[12] Eventually Nickelodeon HD launched first through KPN Interactive TV on 13 September 2012.[13]

Sister channel Spike launched in the Netherlands on 1 October 2015.[14] Initially it was broadcasting only at night, time-sharing with Nickelodeon.[15]

On 12 December 2016 Spike launched as a 24-hours channel on Ziggo, followed by KPN, Telfort, XS4ALL, Caiway and T-Mobile Thuis 3 months later. At the same time Nickelodeon became a 24-hours channel again, broadcasting TeenNick at night, and also introducing The Splat in the Netherlands. In Flanders Spike and Nickelodeon keep on time-sharing.[16][17][18] In the Netherlands, Nickelodeon airs old popular shows after 21:00 - as the channel cites that its young audience is asleep. It airs iCarly (TV series) , Victorious (TV series) , and more.
