New York Nights: Success in the City

New York Nights: Success in the City (also known as simply New York Nights) is an interaction-based action-adventure video game developed by Gameloft Montreal and published by Gameloft. It was released for button-operated mobile phones in 2005 for iPhone in 2009. New York Nights is the first installment in the Nights series, and features two-dimensional (2D) graphics and is similar to The Sims series. A sequel, New York Nights 2: Friends For Life was later released for mobile phones.

The default title screen shows characters (two males and two females) standing right next to each other as they see tons of cash floating in the air in the middle of Times Square. However, a different title screen is shown in the Japanese version of the game.

Who knows, you might even find true love! Remember, time is always ticking away, so if you haven't made a name for yourself in forty days, it's right back to square one!

  • iPhone: "You arrive in Manhattan fresh off the plane and have a little more than the shirt in your back. Find friends, find profitable enjoyment and hopefully true love. Dream big in the city that never sleeps!"

The plot centers around a player character (whose gender is chosen by the player) who have left their parents from Alabama and are seeking a new life in New York City. The character only has 40 days and during this period they have to make new friends, find a job and hopefully true love or else the "Game Over" condition will occur.

Gameplay

iPhone

The player only taps on the screen to point the area where his/her avatar will go. To chat with non-player characters, the player has to tap the interaction button prompted whenever near one. There is a lot of interactions that can be performed, such as chatting, flirting, and pranking. Many activities can be performed, depending on which location the player is at. Performing activities results in addition or subtraction of the player character's attributes (there are 16 of them). The player gets to visit the many famous landmarks of Manhattan.

Mobile

The player can use the directional pad (D-pad) or the numeric keypad to move the player character. To chat with non-player characters; the player has to come close to the one and press the button on the center of the D-pad or 5 on the numeric keypad when prompted to interact. There is a heavy amount of interactions that can be performed. There are lots of activities and actions that can be performed, such as eating pizza, watching television (TV) and getting a tan. These actions contribute to the four attributes of the character (they are: Health, Beauty, Humor, and Culture). The player visits facades commonly found in NYC.

Reception

Due to its success which reached to 4 million downloads, New York Nights received generally positive reviews from gaming companies such as IGN and Pocketgamer who gave the game an 8.8/10 and 8/10 points respectively. It also became subject to many game reviews.

Other game reviewers such as GameSpot Asia[5] gave the game an 8.2/10 reviews, iFans.com also gave it an 8.2/10 saying that the game was "GREAT, especially for those gamers who likes The Sims 3. "

Slidetoplay[6] gave it a 3.0/5 and PCmag gave the game a 4.5/5 reviews saying that the game was "Excellent...Just as long as you go home and take the subway before 3:00am".[7]
