History

NTIN was founded as Training Preparation Class of Medical Workers in Southern Taiwan in June 1952. In August 1953, it was promoted to Taiwan Provincial Tainan Vocational High School of Nursing.

It was upgraded to National Tainan Institute of Nursing on 1 August 2000.[1]

For over 60 years the school has nurtured outstanding nursing talents who work in and out of the country and receive deep praises. It was approved by the Ministry of Education to promote to National Tainan Institute of Nursing (NTIN) on August 1, 2000. The NTIN established the five-year division, the two-year division, the two-year evening division, and the two-year on-job division; the first one enrols graduates of junior high schools, the second one enrols graduates of the department of nursing of vocational high schools, and the third and last ones enrol graduates of the senior and vocational high schools.

Recently, because that the living standards of people were to move up and the requirements of the nursing quality grew with each passing day, under the eager expectations of the society, the school was approved by the Ministry of Education to promote to National Tainan Junior College of Nursing (formerly known as NTIN) in August 1, 2000. It establishes the five-year division, the two-year division, the two-year evening division, and the two-year on-job division, where the first one enrols graduates of the junior high schools, the second one enrols graduates of the department of nursing of vocational high schools, and the third one and the last one enrol graduates of both the senior high schools and the vocational high schools. The teaching purposes and visions of the school are to nurture students into practical nursing talents who have international views, science and humanity disciplines and are also able to aspire the self-learning.

Academics

Nursing Curriculum
The student who attends nursing school will be having these following courses:
(1) General education courses: Chinese, English, chemistry, music, drama, art, etc.
(2) Professional foundation courses: nutriology, psychology, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, physical assessment, and related experimental courses.
(3) Professional core courses: fundamental nursing, medical-surgical nursing, maternal-newborn nursing, pediatric nursing, psychiatric nursing, public health nursing, and experimental and practical courses of all nursing branches.
(4) Professional required and elective courses formulated by the school: long-term care, geriatric care, hospice care, critical care, emergency care, rehabilitation care, clinical test data interpretation, Chinese medical science, and related pragmatic courses that are required or elective.
(5) Required and elective general knowledge courses: computer, sports and leisure, livelihood esthetics, thanatology (death studies), introduction to environmental protection science, English conversation, career planning, etc.
(6) Clinical Practical Training: On-site (or clinical) practical training places consist of the subsidiary medical centre of NCKU, CHI-MEI medical centre, Tainan city hospital, SINLAU hospital, Jianan Psychiatric Centre, Tainan hospital, KUO general hospital in Tainan, the public health centre of Tainan city, etc.

Characteristic Teaching Center

1. Multimedia Audiovisual Teaching Center of Medical-Surgical Nursing and Critical Care Nursing
To promote the quality of medical- surgical nursing, this multimedia audiovisual teaching centre was established. It comprises the modern demonstration wards, critical care units, advanced simulators, modern medical types of equipment, and various teaching aids which are used to train the students efficiently and enhance the students’ abilities to take care of the patients. Besides, there are multimedia audiovisual types of equipment which are used to increase the students’ self-learning abilities. The following pictures show that students in the centre are performing medical-surgical nursing skills, such as the practice of under-water seal drainage, colostomy care skills, and the assessments of cardiopulmonary function.

2. Division of Basic Medical Science
The Division of Basic Medical Science of NTIN is responsible for teaching and training students to study basic medical science, which encompasses Biology, Human Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Immunology. Research facilities and equipment are excellent and include human tissue slides, modules, microtome, flow cytometry, protein 2D-system etc... In order to extend basic medical science to the community, our division also holds Teenagers’ Biomedical Summer Camp annually.

3. Maternal-Child Education Center
For the purpose of improving the quality of teaching in maternal care and childcare, this centre was established. The faculty members and students utilize this centre to instruct and learn relevant skills such as breastfeeding, contraceptives, physical assessment for perinatal mothers and newborns.

4. Holistic Health Care Demonstration Center
The nursing school has been established a very thorough Holistic Health Care Demonstration Center that is mainly aimed the trend at ageing society and accorded with modern streams contains the area of simulated experience ageing, a residence for an elderly, activating exercise program for psychomotor function with visual aids, long-term care demonstrations, bath and shower.

5. The Center for Health Promotion and Education
The Center of Health Promotion and Education at the National Tainan Institute of Nursing was established in 2002. There are a number of diverse types of equipment for health-related physical fitness tests, multimedia health education, and health promotion. The Center serves as a facility for Health Promotion courses that require demonstrations as well as for research associated with health promotion. In addition, the Center is committed to excellence in health promotion by providing a variety of health care services to the community population, such as free “health screening” and “health promotion activities.

6. English Self-Learning Center
In order to go with the governmental policy of internationalization, to increase the students’ English ability, and to provide excellent self-learning environment and resources, English Self-Learning Center was established in this college. There are various language materials, modern equipments and on-line learning programs in this English Self-Learning Center. Many sessions are open for the students to use, so the students can make good use of this centre flexibly to improve their English ability in their free time. In addition, the students can access the online learning programs at any place outside the campus, such as their homes, to do their learning, to record the learning process and the results.

Campus Life

The youth should be splendid, don't waste your life. Professional nursing ability is the most significant subject of our school. Besides, we also made efforts to promote management of student clubs and societies, humanities and arts that hope applies to structure, activities and development of clubs to cultivate excellent students' culture. Our school established Student Union; all students of NTIN elected the president by the organization. Student Union is clubs' engine plans for welcome and farewell party, Christmas Eve, anniversary evening and garden party. There are 28 clubs and societies in our school now contain literature, scholarship, recreational, service and autonomic etc. We take to place an exhibition of clubs every year and invite other schools to inspect and learn each other. Now we have wide spaces to expand clubs and societies. We will welcome the nursing adoringly youths to choose our school. Our school always exhibits the activities of literature and art, for example, painting appreciation, reminiscent activity, clubs live show, review of school journals, anniversary ingenious gatepost couplets and outstanding aboriginal nurse to reveal ingenuities, energy and cultivated elegance for students. We really hope students become brilliant profession nurse with humanity and caring.

Transportation & Geography

NTIN is in walking distance southwest from Tainan Station of the Taiwan Railways.
It is apart from the Tainan Railway Station about 500 meters and is a close neighbour of Tainan hospital. There are many department stores, film studios and cinemas, publishing houses, restaurants, and informal diners surrounding the campus to sufficiently provide students' consuming requirements with daily foods, clothes, residences, moving, amusements, and medical treatments.
