Nims Group was founded by Prof. (Dr.) Balvir S. Tomar, a scholar of Harvard, USA and Kings College London. Tomar He established Nims Group in 2001 by starting a medical college - the National Institute of Medical Sciences. Under his leadership Nims Group has made tremendous progress. News India, a national news channel, is also a venture of Nims Group, which includes Nims Medical College, Nims Dental College, Nims Nursing College, Nims College of Pharmacy, Nims Institute of Management, Nims Engineering College, Nims Institute of Law, Nims International School, and Nims-Fluxlite LED Manufacturing Plant.

Nims University is becoming a leading center of education in health sciences, human sciences, technical training, advanced engineering, personnel, corporate management, creative literature, innovative multimedia, art and architecture. NIMS offers more than 500 courses in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, paramedical, engineering and technology, management, architecture, humanities, fashion design, and law.

The university was established under the Nims University Rajasthan, Jaipur Act, 2008 enacted by the Government of Rajasthan, and duly recognized by the UGC Under the provisions of Sections 2(f) and 22 of the University Grants Commissions Act, 1956. It is among the few technical universities in the nation that has all the modern amenities and provides the highest caliber of education in a variety of degree courses. The university is recognized by MCI, DCI, PCI, INC, BCI and COA.

Nims University is the first composite model self-financed university in the entire country that deals with all disciplines that have relevance to the present day context. It began in 2002 with the name of National Institute of Medical Sciences. The university was established by the Government in 2008 and has been recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) along with other apex level regulatory councils.

Within its first eight years, Nims University achieved excellence in all fields of higher education. It has had more than a thousand scholarly contributions by students and faculty members. The university practices stringent norms to uphold the quality of research.

Nims University is the first university in India to provide technical and professional education in modern disciplines such as aircraft and aerospace engineering, oil & natural gas engineering, mines engineering, stone crafting, leather and textile engineering, nanotechnology, agriculture engineering, food technology, biomedical engineering, energy and power, and nuclear engineering. Various other specific management disciplines are forestry for futuristic sustainable development for green energy, and health and nutrition management. In order to give a fillip to the scarcity in aeronautical engineering, pilot and other allied services the university has purchased two aircraft of 5 and 55 seats, to provide hands-on experience to the students.

Being a self-financed university, Nims University pays utmost attention to social responsibility. It provides free health care and treatment to the villagers in and around Jaipur, as well as within a 250-km radius of the university. In addition to the free treatment, they have been providing free lodging, food & transportation to the patients in the rural areas. Nims Hospital doctors have successfully conducted camps in the villages and have been eradicating blindness & other diseases.

NIMS Hospital, a super-specialty tertiary care hospital, is a constituent unit of Nims University which provides most modern treatment for all diseases and disorders and has modern sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic facilities. The hospital's outpatient department attracts more than a thousand patients daily, not only from Rajasthan but also many parts of the country. Nims Hospital has been developed as a Nims super-specialty hospital with -modern facilities for liver and kidney transplants, angiography, angioplasty, bypass surgery, valve replacement surgery, laparoscopic stone removal, prostate surgery, dialysis, kidney transplant, knee/hip replacement, spinal surgery, neurosurgery, cornea transplant, lens replacement, infertility treatment, and IVF.

Six new super specialty departments, Cardiology, Urology, Nephrology, IVF, Neuro Sciences and Ophthalmology, have been added, with advanced facilities. The highlight of this super-specialty hospital is providing advance tertiary level treatment at a very low cost, lower than that of government hospitals.

The first successful liver transplant in Rajasthan was recently performed in the Nims Super-specialty Hospital.

For the benefit of rural students from poor and low socio-economic families the university has been instrumental in providing education to the students while earning. The success of the distance education program lies with innovative self-learning material, online and offline learning supports. The Distance Education program is of high quality and demanded in the country. It is making tremendous progress under the dynamic leadership of Dr Pankaj Singh, a renowned neurosurgeon who has recently moved from the United Kingdom to take responsibilities in Nims.

News India, a satellite channel, was also founded under Nims Group in 2014 to provide knowledge on current affairs to the students and masses. News India Channel was originally founded in 2014 by Dr. B.S Tomar Chairman of NIMS University. Key people in News India Channel are Dr. B.S Tomar (Chairman Nims Group & Chancellor of NIMS University), Dr. Pankaj Singh (CEO, News India) and Mr. Vishwavujai Singh (Addl. Channel Head).

Nims University especially emphasizes training the students, keeping in view the employability and placement in government departments and reputed organizations. Personality and skill development, and empowering students and young professionals as per the industry's need, through short training programs and specific module courses, are the unique employment oriented training programs run by the Nims University. There has been nearly 100% placement of the students of the University.

Nims University has received awards for Best Skill Development for two consecutive years, in 2015 and 2016.
