My Super Psycho Sweet 16

My Super Psycho Sweet 16 is a 2009 American teen drama slasher television film, based on the MTV show, My Super Sweet 16. The film follows two girls: an outcast named Skye Rotter (Lauren McKnight), and an extremely spoiled girl named Madison Penrose (Julianna Guill). Madison convinces her parents to re-open the Roller Dome for her sweet sixteenth birthday party. The Roller Dome, a roller skating rink that Skye's father used to own had been closed because a series of brutal murders took place there ten years ago. The killer, who happens to be Skye's father, comes back to wreak havoc during Madison's party, however.

Plot

Madison Penrose is preparing for her Sweet 16. She wants to have her party at the Roller Dome, a once-popular roller skating rink with a violent history. A flashback reveals that Charlie Rotter was the owner and entertainer of the Roller Dome (he is known as "Lord of the Rink" and dresses in costume attire). One day during a birthday party Charlie is humiliated in front of everybody, including his 6-year-old daughter Skye, by an ungrateful teenage boy named Craig. Later that same night, Craig and his girlfriend, Karen, break into the Roller Dome. They are brutally murdered by Charlie, who's dressed up as the "Lord of the Rink". Young Skye witnesses the murders and calls the police. They find him in the basement and, upon arresting Charlie, discover that four more bodies have been dismembered and stuffed into oil bins. While being transported to prison, the van crashes and burns, and Charlie appears to have died.

Ten years later, Skye is now an outcast, picked on by her classmates because of her father's crimes. One morning she has a flirtatious moment with Madison's ex-boyfriend, Brigg. This is seen by Olivia, one of Madison's best friends. Olivia immediately rushes to tell Madison, who's with their other best friend Chloe, and Madison decides that Skye needs to be punished. Later that same day, after swimming class, Skye arrives at her gym locker to see that it has been trashed with paint and her clothes are cut up. Madison's friend Lilly arrives and tells Skye it was Madison and her squad that destroyed her stuff. Then admits that she actually dislikes Madison and encourages Skye to sleep with Brigg to make Madison angry. Skye refuses, and in just a towel and a one-piece bathing suit, tries to leave the building. But she is stopped by Madison and her friends who bully her. Afterward, Skye is walking home and Brigg sees her while driving by. He reverses back and offers a ride, which Skye reluctantly accepts. During the drive, Brigg asks Skye to hang out Saturday night and she accepts. The next morning at school Madison hands out invitations to her Sweet 16 and invites Brigg, interfering with his plans with Skye. Later that day, while hanging out, Skye's best friend Derek says he wants to sneak into Madison's party and she should join him. Skye initially refuses since it's where her father committed his crimes. Brigg then arrives and explains to her that he's only going because he and Madison have history, that he will make it up to her. Skye tries to tell him that they both know things aren't going to work between them because they're too different. Brigg kisses her and says he wants to spend more time together, just on a different day. When he leaves Skye decides that she's going to crash Madison's party.

Skye texts Lilly for help and she leaves a door in the back unlocked for Skye and Derek to sneak in. Once inside, Skye leaves Derek to find Brigg and Derek leaves to find a girl to talk to. But Derek ends up being seen by one of Madison's friends, Kevin. The party planner is then killed by Charlie, who actually survived the crash. Skye finds Brigg and they start roller skating together while Derek finds Lilly and they start talking. Lilly reveals that she snuck in a bottle of Vodka and asks Derek to go get some punch so they can party. Derek walks off to get the punch, but Kevin and his group grab him and lock him in the basement. After informing Madison that Derek crashed, Madison then sees that Skye is also there and gets furious. Chloe assures Madison that she and Olivia will do something about her. Derek, still locked in the basement, is let out by Lilly, who is drunk and ends up making out with him. Kevin, who wants to also do something about Skye, takes Charlie's "Lord of the Rink" costume and plays a trick on her by standing up in the mezzanine of the Roller Dome and pretending to be her father. Skye spots Kevin dressed up and immediately walks over to him. When she sees that it's not her dad, Kevin laughs and mocks her until she starts to cry. Once she's gone, Charlie pops up and bludgeons him to death. Chloe plans to hide in a bathroom stall with a fire extinguisher and spray down Skye with it. Olivia is starting to feel guilty about what they're doing, but Chloe tells her to get over it. Oliva reluctantly dumps her entire drink on Skye's dress so that she will have to wash up in the bathroom Chloe is hiding in. Brigg, who's looking for Skye, ends up in the VIP room and is ambushed by Madison. She throws herself at him and he momentarily kisses back. Skye walks in on them and leaves the room upset. Brigg realizes he doesn't want Madison anymore and tells her to back off. Meanwhile, Chloe is waiting in the bathroom and hears someone walk in. Thinking it's Skye, she runs out of a stall and sprays down Charlie instead. He uses the extinguisher to beat her to death.

Skye starts looking for Derek so they can leave but is unsuccessful. She goes to her father's old office to have a quiet place to call him, but Derek refuses to leave until he finds Lilly and talks to her one more time. Meanwhile, Lilly is outside since she decided to key Madison's new Beamer. While she's keying the words "Happy Sweet 16" into the hood, the car revs up and Charlie uses it to chase her away from the building. She runs up a stairwell and tries to escape onto the street by climbing over a locked gate, but Charlie catches up and slits her throat. Brigg finds Skye in her father's office and tries to explain himself, but she doesn't want to hear it. When Madison's father starts giving a speech, Olivia gives up on finding Chloe, thinking she's probably hooking up somewhere. She decides to use the bathroom, only to find Chloe's body on the floor. Olivia runs out to the crowd and tries to warn everyone, but Charlie appears and decapitates her. Frightened, everyone leaves except for Madison and Skye. Madison accuses Skye of ruining her party and starts getting physical with her before Charlie appears, locking the front exit. They try to run out the back but find their path blocked by the gutted party planner, Charlie then surprise attacks Madison. They're able to get away and reunite with Brigg, who came back for Skye. Charlie reappears and they decide to run to the mezzanine. They become trapped, but Derek flashes spotlights in Charlie's face, distracting him so Skye and Madison can escape. Brigg begins fighting with Charlie and when the girls reach the dance floor below, Brigg is thrown from above. Skye, Derek, and Madison see that Brigg's not moving and try to run out of the building. Charlie grabs Madison and slams her head into a table, knocking her out. Charlie then catches up to Skye and Derek and starts strangling Derek. Skye begs her father to spare him, and Charlie does so by throwing him outside, locking himself inside with Madison and Skye. Madison wakes up in the basement with Skye, both their hands tied to a table. Skye says that she initially tried to convince her father to spare Madison, but stopped when she realized that Madison is nothing but a bully.

Madison admits that Skye's right and she has been a bully, but that doesn't mean she deserves to die. Charlie then unties Skye, gives her a knife, and tries to convince her to kill Madison. Skye begins raising the knife in the air but decides to stab Charlie in the leg instead, then knocks over a cabinet to pin him to the ground. Skye rushes over to untie Madison, but when she starts struggling with the rope, Madison throws insults and blames Skye for the deaths at her party. Once untied, Madison shoves Skye to the ground so she can get to the exit first, but Charlie reaches out and grabs her leg. While Madison's struggling with Charlie, Skye gets up and rushes to the exit. She pauses to look back at Madison, who's hurling another insult and yelling at her to help. When Madison frees herself, Skye decides to close the chain-link gate and lock her inside with Charlie. Madison panics and insists that she can't just leave her there. Skye pauses again, looks Madison in the eye, and says "Have a Super Birthday". She then walks up the stairs that lead out of the basement, a smirk on her face. Madison furiously screams insults as she leaves, while Charlie slowly rises up behind her. Skye gets upstairs and sees the police enter the building, she tells them where her father is before going outside. She runs into Derek, who is excited she's okay, but Skye ignores him and walks towards Madison's new Beamer. The police arrive in the basement, they see that Charlie's already escaped and has slit Madison's throat. In the parking lot, Skye enters Madison's new car and uses it to leave town on her own. A few days later, Brigg wakes up late one night in the hospital. Skye arrives, she tells him this is the first time he's woken up and that she came back for him. She then brutally stabs him to death. Brigg frantically awakens and a nurse comforts him, he realizes that Skye killing him was just a nightmare. He asks the nurse where Skye is, but she tells him no one has seen her. The nurse leaves the room and Brigg turns over on his side, only to see a drawing that Skye left on the table next to him. He stares at it with a smile, realizing she snuck in to check on him before she left town.

Production

Director Jacob Gentry worked on the film with his long-time friend Alex Motlagh. Gentry was not a fan of reality shows, figuring they are “the lowest form of entertainment you have." But once he started watching the series that the producers were trying to base the movie on, he had a realization that it’s the perfect scenario for a horror film. Gentry went on to say he's aware that the film "is clearly in the “slasher genre” where there are rules viewers expect will be followed." He adds, "It’s like playing the blues, you want to give it your spin but you don’t want to interrupt the formula too much. You still have to play the blues. In this case, we don’t want to reinvent the wheel.”[1]

Filming took place in Atlanta, where Gentry and Motlagh grew up. The film never mentions Atlanta, but it does show the city's skyline at the very end. Gentry told Radio and TV Talk, "There are things shown that makes it clear it's Atlanta if you know Atlanta." One of the characters, Madison, also makes reference to flying a stylist in 3,000 miles from Los Angeles, making it evident that the film is set somewhere on the East Coast. Gentry added, "We [also] wanted to make it every city, not too region specific. We wanted it to connect with anyone."[1] The high school scenes were mostly filmed at Henry W. Grady high school, including the library, locker room and gym. Shots were also filmed at Sprayberry High School. All of the minor characters lived in Atlanta, making casting much easier. Thousands of girls auditioned for the role of Madison Penrose, according to casting directors, but Julianna Guill seemed "Perfect for the role."

Critical reception

The film was generally well received by audiences. It delivered the network's strongest rating in the time period in over a year and a half. Among female teens, the film ranked #1 in its time period versus all ad supported TV competition and #2 overall across all television competition behind only Disney.[2] Scott Foy of Dread Central rated it 2.5 stars and wrote, "Too much of My Super Psycho Sweet 16 is just a regurgitating of teen movie clichés with the emphasis more on the romantic triangle and teen bullying side of the plot than the masked psychopath randomly hacking and slashing party patrons."[3]

Unrated version

Airings on MTV are slightly edited; iTunes and DVD releases are uncut, featuring a bit more gore. Edited scenes include Craig's death, showing the pool stick impaling him; the party-planner's corpse in the chase scene is shown longer; and Brigg's dream in the end is longer.

Home release

My Super Psycho Sweet 16 was released on DVD on October 18, 2010, to coincide with the premiere of the sequel a week later on October 22. It is the unrated version and contains no special features. It is available to buy on Amazon.com and to download on the iTunes Store. Due to several complaints about the DVD just being a burnt copy of the movie, Paramount Home Entertainment announced a Blu-ray Combo Pack edition, but no official release date has been announced.
