My Hero Academia (season 4)

The fourth season of the My Hero Academia anime series was produced by Bones and directed by Kenji Nagasaki, following the story of the original manga from the second half of the 14th volume to the first chapters of the 21st volume. The fourth season premiered on October 12, 2019, on ytv.[1] Funimation has licensed the season for an English-language release in North America.[2] Funimation's adaptation premiered on Adult Swim's Toonami block on November 9, 2019.[3]

Season chronology

Four pieces of theme music are used for this season: two opening themes and two ending themes. For the first fourteen episodes, the opening theme is "Polaris" (ポラリス) by Blue Encount, while the ending theme is "Kōkai no Uta" (航海の唄) by Sayuri.[4] The second opening theme is "Star Marker" by Kana-Boon and the ending theme is "Shout Baby" by Ryokuōshoku Shakai.[5] Chrissy Costanza performs the insert songs "Each Goal" in episode 19 and "Hero too" in episode 23.[6]

This results in a conflict where Overhaul, supported by a sniper, kills Magne and cripples Mr. Compress before taking his leave while offering Tomura time to reconsider. Meanwhile, Izuku enters Hero-Work Studies, and with help from Mirio, sets off to apply for Sir Nighteye's agency, who was All Might's former sidekick and is investigating Overhaul's criminal activities.

Izuku battles Sir Nighteye to get his stamp and approval to join his agency, Nighteye using his Quirk Foresight to dodge Izuku while shaking the youth's confidence when he revealed a prophecy he had of All Might's eventual death. Though Izuku lost, he gained enough of Nighteye's respect to join his agency. Some time later, Izuku and Mirio encounter a frightened girl with Overhaul revealing himself to them.

Izuku and Mirio surprisingly encounter Overhaul during their patrol while introducing the frightened girl as his daughter Eri. The two forced in allowing Eri to leave with Overhaul to keep their cover, especially when Eri realizes Overhaul was about to kill them. Afterwards, still emotionally stricken by All Might's secret about his originally planned successor, Izuku confronts him to demand the whole truth, which he'll have to accept when it stretches further worse about All Might's past and future.

After being brought to the Shie Hassaikai's lair, Tomura explains he only came to know Overhaul's plans as he takes out the bullet that hit Mr. Compress and caused him to momentarily lose his Quirk. In Esuha City, Eijiro and Tamaki Amajiki, Suneater of UA's Big Three, accompany pro hero Fat Gum on patrol when they confront criminals using both bullets that stop Quirks along with Quirk-enhancement drugs, with Tamaki shot while Eijiro goes beyond his limits to stop the remaining criminal with his Red Riot Unbreakable technique.

Izuku, Eijiro, Ochaco, Tsuyu learn that Sir Nighteye organized a massive meeting with the other Hero Work-Studies and numerous pro heroes to discuss the growing threat posed by Overhaul and the Shie Hassaikai. During the meeting, it is revealed that the bullet that shot Tamaki contained the blood and cells of a human whose Quirk is similar to Aizawa's with Nighteye assuming that person to be Eri to Izuku and Mirio's horror. Nighteye then proposes having the heroes investigate all known Hassaikai properties to find Eri's location. Meanwhile, Eri cries in bed and thinks about Izuku's warm embracing touch. She's never felt a hand so kind before and is suffering under Overhaul's watch.

Izuku and Mirio overcome their heavy emotions following the meeting and past revelations as Sir Nighteye manages to use his Quirk on one of Overhaul's subordinates who became Eri's new caretaker. Once Eri's location is confirmed with some intel on layout of the Shie Hassaikai's headquarters, the heroes launch a massive raid with Dragoon Hero's group subduing most of the yakuza while Nighteye and Fat Gum's groups proceed to the basement as Overhaul retrieves Eri.

Eijiro takes heavy damage, spurred back into the fight after remembering his middle school years to help Fat Gum defeat Rappa.

Fat Gum and Eijiro are victorious in their fight against Rappa and Rengai, the former taking the two to recuperate out of respect while revealing Overhaul's plan. Meanwhile, Izuku's group struggle against Irinaka's attacks before Himiko and Twice ambush them. Though Tomura loaned Himiko and Twice to the Shie Hassaikai as part of Overhaul's conditions, the two are encouraged by Tomura's confidence in them as they provoke Irinaka into attacking everyone.

While Toga and Twice were previously subjected to Shin Nemoto's Confession Quirk so the Shie Hassaikai can make sure Tomura will not betray them, the two backstab the yakuza on their own accord by first taunting Irinaka into exposing himself so the heroes can capture him. Meanwhile, Mirio manages to rescue Eri after fighting his way through Nemoto and his fellow Eight Expendable member Deidoro Sakaki. Overhaul then admits that Eri is not his daughter as he has Nemoto fire one of the completed Quirk-Destroying bullets at the girl to force Mirio to take the hit, losing his Quirk as consequence. But as Mirio refuses to back down, Izuku arrives.
7512"Unforeseen Hope"

After leaving restrained to Rock Lock, Sir Nighteye's group catch up to Mirio after he lost his Quirk protecting Eri from a Quirk-Killer Bullet. But Hari Kurono removes himself and Aizawa from play, revealing Eri to be the previous boss's granddaughter. Overhaul refuses to accept defeat as he uses his Quirk to assimilate Nemoto and turn himself into a monster while revealing that Mirio lost his Quirk, Nighteye ordering Izuku to take Mirio and Eri to safety while he holds the villain off. But Nighteye is wounded, while his Quirk shows him a future where he and Izuku are killed. But despite that and Overhaul using Nemeto's Quirk, Izuku refuses to give up on saving Eri.

While Sir Nighteye and Izuku face Overhaul, Ryukyu's team deal with the Eight Expendables' stamina-draining Rikiya Katsukame after he infecting himself with a Quirk boosting drug. But Toga, posing as Izuku, orchestrates the girls into defeating Rikiya in a manner to expose the basement level with Overhaul attempting to escape. But Eri is spurred by the heroes' resolve to free herself by revealing her Quirk to "rewind" people, separating Nemoto from Overhaul while grabbed by Izuku. But Overhaul assimilates Rikiya to go after Izuku and Eri, Nighteye seeing this as how Izuku dies. Though warned that Eri's quirk would rewind him out of existence if he continues holding her, Izuku uses One For All Full Cowling at 100% to bypass that so Eri's Quirk only heals him as he manages to defeat the villain with Nighteye astonished that his ward defied fate.

The raid on the Shie Hassaikai is a success as Izuku defeats Overhaul as Eri reverts his injuries and Rikiya to normal while Tamaki saves Aizawa from Kurono. Aizawa manages to negate Eri's Quirk with Erasure before it kills Izuku as the Shie Hassaikai are arrested while Toga and Twice successfully escape and inform the League of Villains about the Yakuza's location. The League intercepts the police convoy to Tokadona Villain Hospital to make Overhaul suffer, Tomura and Mr. Compress destroy Overhaul's arms so he can never use his Quirk again while taking the Quirk-Destroying bullets for their own use. Meanwhile, sometime after Izuku is checked out of the hospital, he learns that Sir Nighteye's injuries from the fight with Overhaul are fatal as he, All Might, and Mirio visit the man in his final moments.

Up in the mountains, the police along with Gran Torino find Kurogiri of the League of Villains, but they unexpectedly ran into one of All For One's servants, Gigantomachia. At the hospital, Izuku checks on Mirio before he leaves for school, but Eri is still feverish and must remain behind in her bedroom. Meanwhile, Shoto and Katsuki head off to get their Provisional Hero licenses, this time guided by All Might and Present Mic. At the training facility, Endeavor confronts All Might and says he wishes to speak with him.
7916"Win Those Kids' Hearts"

Katsuki and Shoto attend a special Hero License course, having both failed the second phase of the last exam. There, they encounter Inasa and Camie from Shiketsu High School, and the four are tasked with winning the hearts of Masegaki Elementary School children. All the while, Endeavor has a serious talk with All Might about being the Symbol of Peace.

In order to win the hearts of the kids, Katsuki, Inasa, Shoto, and Camie must work together and use their quirks to get their spirits moved. Fortunately, they succeeded in getting the job done. Endeavor told Shoto how proud he will become a hero he can be proud as well. As September ends, October begins, and the U.A. students attend Sir Nighteye's funeral along with the pro heroes. Eri has also woken up at the hospital, but since she is not yet emotionally stable, no one can visit her. Furthermore, it was discovered that the horn on her forehead which her Rewind originates has shrunk when her fever went down. And right now, Izuku noticed that Aoyama has been acting strangely... but he can't wonder why.
8118"School Festival"

It's October, and the U.A. students are planning to launch a school festival for the fall. Meanwhile, Izuku and Mirio have been requested to see Eri. But she still hasn't been saved from the inside, and Overhaul's shadow is blocking out the light, meaning she doesn't know how to smile or have fun. So in order for her to smile, Izuku decides to bring Eri to the school festival. Elsewhere, a villain named Gentle Criminal and his subordinate, La Brava, are searching for a scheme that will put his name down in the history of villainy.

Principal Nezu worked hard to make sure that no villains can interfere in the festival. If an alarm goes off, even if it's a false one, they'll be forced to evacuate and cancel it. Meanwhile, Gentle and La Brava are in pursuit of a legendary tea.
8421"Deku vs. Gentle Criminal"

Gentle Criminal has finally accepted defeat and is delivered to the cops by Hound Dog and Ectoplasm's clones. However, there's still a chance to see Eri smile, so Izuku went back to where the fight started to find his supplies with help from one of Ectoplasm's clones. And before long, the school concert has finally started off with a bang! The concert has made a major impact on Eri's heart as Overhaul's shadow disappears and brought her spirits straight to the light. The school festival wasn't a true success until Eri got her candy apple. In the post-credits, La Brava is interrogated by two police detectives while Gentle Criminal is interrogated by a gorilla detective. When the gorilla detective asks if he would like some tea, Gentle Criminal states that he'll take earl grey. The gorilla detective states that he'll get whatever tea they have.

As November comes to a close, Eri will be staying at U.A. Meanwhile, the Wild, Wild Pussycats pay a visit to Class 1-A. Kota shows up to Deku's surprise, and even though Ragdoll lost her quirk, she still assists in the office. Pixie Bob received a message from Tartarus and said that All For One still has Ragdoll's quirk and is willing to return it to her if he could be allowed to move in order to do so. Elsewhere, it is time for the broadcast of the Japanese Hero Billboard Chart; this announcement is being held at Kamino for its importance and is special for the fact that All Might will not be on the chart for the first time as well as the top ten Heroes themselves appearing on stage for the presentation of their rankings. The announcement of the Hero Billboard Chart top ten Heroes begin; at Number Ten is the Dragon Hero: Ryukyu who has dropped a rank, Number Nine is the Equipped Hero: Yoroi Musha, at Number Eight is the Laundry Hero: Wash, at Number Seven is Kamui Woods. At Number Six is the Shield Hero: Crust, Number Five is the Rabbit Hero: Mirko, Number Four is the Ninja Hero: Edgeshot, Number Three is Best Jeanist who could not attend as he is still recovering from his encounter with All For One. At Number Two is the Winged Hero: Hawks who has moved up from Number Three. The new Number One Hero is revealed to be none other than the Legendary Peacekeeper, the Fiery Hero: Endeavor. Meanwhile, Dabi from the League of Villains is sending an intelligent Nomu to hunt down the heroes.

Even though he's the new Number One hero, Endeavor fought the talking Nomu as hard as he could. Meanwhile, Hawks uses the feathers on his wings to keep the bystanders out of trouble. The Nomu strikes Endeavor's left side of his face, destroying his eye. Without All Might as the Symbol of Peace, people everywhere are running in panic just like the Kamino incident 3 months ago. But even with that scar on his face, Endeavor pushes himself beyond the limit of his flames and defeats the intelligent Nomu. Despite his injuries, Endeavor survived the blast and standing strong with his fist raised in the air. It reminded how All Might was still standing during the fight with All For One, but it was also a sign of his start as the new Number One hero. In a post-credits scene, a sleeping Deku has a mysterious vision where he encounters All For One's younger brother, the first user of One For All. Their hands meet and Deku suddenly awakens with his hand glowing and his window broken.

Toho will release the fourth season of the anime on DVD and Blu-ray in six volumes in Japan, with the first volume was released on January 22, 2020, and the final volume being scheduled for June 17, 2020.[39]
