Montjuïc Funicular

The Montjuïc Funicular (Catalan: Funicular de Montjuïc; Spanish: Funicular de Montjuic) is a funicular railway in the city of Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain. The line is largely in tunnel and connects the Barcelona Metro Paral·lel station (connection to lines L2 and L3) with the hill of Montjuïc and the various sporting and other facilities there.[1][2][3]

The upper station of the funicular is adjacent to the lower station of the Montjuïc Cable Car, a gondola lift that continues uphill to a terminal near the Montjuïc Castle on the summit of the hill.[1][2][3] There is also a bus stop services by the 150 line which runs from the upper station of the funicular to the Castle summit and which is part of the same fare network (ATM) as the Metro, providing a cost less transfer to the Castle as an alternative to the Cable Car.

The funicular uses the same fares, part of the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità integrated fare network, as the metro and is listed on maps as part of the metro network. It is operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), which also operates most of the metro lines.[1][2]

The funicular is one of three funiculars in Barcelona, the other two being the Funicular de Vallvidrera and the Funicular del Tibidabo, although neither of these is operated by the TMB.[2]

Technical parameters

The railway has a single track configuration with a passing loop between stations. There is 758 metres (2,487 ft) of track, which rises a total of 76 metres (249 ft) at a maximum 18% gradient. The railway has a maximum speed of 10 metres per second (32.8 ft/s).[1]

History

The line was opened in 1928, in order to serve the International Exhibition of 1929. Until around 1970, the funicular included a second upper stage, linking the current upper station with Montjuïc Castle, a routing now provided by the Montjuïc Cable Car.[1][3]

The line was extensively reconstructed in 1992, in order to cope with traffic to and from the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys and other facilities used for the 1992 Summer Olympics, situated on the Montjuïc hill.[1]
