First studies for larger future surface ships was presented in 2009. Eight ships was planned to join the navy by yearly 2020s and then be avaible to the 2050s. The ships was to be modular ships being able to handle different kind of missions.[1] By 2015 the number of ships had been cut to six ships with four of them being ready by 2023 at a cost of around 4 billion Euros.[2] In January 2020 after a five year long tender the Dutch Damen Group won the construction deal, although the ships will be constructed in the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany.[3] The contract was signed on June 17, 2020.[4] On June, 2020 the German defence ministry officaly cleared 6 billion Euros in the defence budget for the first four ships with the first ship planned to be finished by 2027.[5]
