Mindomo

Mindomo is a versatile freemium collaborative mind mapping, concept mapping and outlining tool developed by Expert Software Applications.[1] Mindomo offers a complete platform to develop ideas and brainstorming interactively with features including sharing, collaboration, task management, presentation and interactive web publication.[2][3] Mindomo offers minimalist user interface with fresh look and powerful functions that help users in organizing information visually, which foster critical thinking through connecting ideas in a visual manner.[4]

Mindomo is available as web app accessible through any browser, also there is offline desktop version for Windows, Linux and Mac. In addition to dedicated apps for both Android and iOS.[5][6] Mindomo's registered users can create and collaborate real-time on mind maps, while unregistered users can view the maps shared with them. Additionally, the software provides its users with ways to create presentations and mind map assignments.[7]

History

  • In 2006 development was begun at Expert Software Application for a mind mapping tool called Mindomo using Adobe Flex development kit which is based on Adobe Flash platform.[8]
  • In 2007 Mindomo web app was launched. The user interface used a ribbon consistent with office 2007.[9][8]
  • In 2008 Mindomo Desktop Version was Released that would requires installing Adobe AIR platform.[10]
  • In 2010 Real-Time collaboration was introduced.[11]
  • In 2011 Mindomo version 6.0 was released ditching the office like ribbon and introduced a minimalist interface with no compromise on functionality.[12]
  • In 2011 Mindomo Presenter was Released.[13][14]
  • In 2012 Mindomo apps for iPad and Android were released.[15][16]
  • In 2014 Mindomo web app made the shift from Flash to HTML5.[17]
  • In 2016 Mindomo Desktop 8.0 was released offer a consistent interface with the web version and no longer requiring Adobe Air.[18]
  • In 2018 Gantt chart was Introduced.[19][20]

Features

Mindomo core features include highly customizable nodes with ability to insert videos, audio, images, notes, emoji, hyperlinks and attachments to any node.[21] Mindomo users can collaborate in real time and can choose to publish their work to the Internet for others to see.[22] Mindomo has a very intuitive presentation mode allowing you to travel through your mind map with smooth zooms and pans[23]. In addition. You can publish your mindmap not as a static image but as an interactive mind map.[24][23]

Mindomo can be used from any standard web browser, or by installing the desktop, iPad and Android applications.[25] As a freemium software, Mindomo offers its basic services for free, while charging for premium features.[26] Drawback of Mindomo is that some of the useful features, such as downloading in certain formats or uploading documents, are only available in the upgraded, paid version.[27]

For educational sector, Mindomo offers student assignments for teachers. in addition to integration with many Learning management systems.[27] Mindomo also has dedicated features for business users including assigning tasks for team members, commenting feature and planning your projects with Gantt chart view.[28]

Cultural Impact

Mindomo provides schools with a platform for students and teachers to work cooperatively to form the 21st century classroom.[29] With Mindomo teachers can become facilitators in guiding students toward achieving their goals.[30] Mindomo foster student's creative expression through allowing students to include videos, images or any external files to support their ideas.[31]

Mindomo offered teachers with assignment tool that allow them to send an online request to their students inviting them to access incomplete mind map about a specific lesson. Student starts working in groups and begin exploring their broad topic questions and all their changes will be sent to their teacher as notifications in which he can provide feedback via Mindomo comment feature. In the end students encouraged to turn their mind map into a presentation using Mindomo presenter to explain their research process step by step.[27] Mindomo also allows for printing mind map on paper, which can be annotated and also distributed to other students for peer review.[5]

In the business context, Mindomo offers capabilities that allows sharing mind maps with team members, who can then make their own updates. Mindomo allows assigning a person to each business function and also lets prioritizing subtopics that need focus. Good project management requires that each function have a person responsible for it.[32]

Michael Stratton the author of "The Effective Project Manager" addressed using mind maps in project management in which he provides examples and templates using Mindomo tool.[33] Stratton states "My use of mind maps has changed how I view and approach work. I will never go back to using MS Word outlines or MS OneNote bullet points when initiating strategy work".[32]

Research

Ballén (2014) studied how Mindomo can shape and characterize students’ awareness of their own learning processes.[34] Ballén carried out his study at a public university in Colombia using class observations, a survey, and some Focus groups. The following excerpts are a good illustrations:[34]

"I think that the most interesting resource that we used was Mindomo because it is useful not only for this subject but for other subjects as well. With this tool you can search for keywords, be creative, and organize your ideas". (Survey result)

"The Mindomo tool is something that you will have to use for the rest of your life; you will always need to do a mind map, and there you can get it easily. You just have to click on a chart and everything just comes out automatically". (Focus group result)

Nazri and his colleagues (2018) employed a Quasi-experimental method to investigate the effectiveness of Mindomo in improving writing scores of 60 ESL students at a private university in Malaysia.[4] The results showed that the use of Mindomo as a pre-writing tool improved students’ writing scores, as students become more efficient in generating and organizing ideas for their writing.[4]

Pertiwi and his colleagues (2018) conducted a quasi-experimental study of using Mindomo to improve students’ writing skill at seventh grade of an Indonesian school.[35] the study listed several effects felt by students when using Mindomo:[35]

  • The Students are happy and enjoy the learning process by using Mindomo.
  • The Students can be creative by using Mindomo.
  • The Students have high motivation to learn writing descriptive text by using Mindomo.
  • The Students are more interest to learn writing descriptive text by using Mindomo.
  • The Students are more focus to learn writing descriptive text by using Mindomo.
  • The Students understand the subject material by using Mindomo.
  • The Students feel easy to brainstorm their idea in writing descriptive text.
  • The Students are not afraid to share their idea by using Mindomo.
  • The Students are not afraid during the learning process because of using Mindomo.  

Reception

When Mindomo launched in 2007 Chuck Frey the author of "The Mind Mapping Software Blog" says that Mindomo sets a new standard for web-based mind mapping tools with features that rivals many desktop mind mapping.[36] In 2014 Mindomo was available to all public schools in Ontario, Canada, as it was approved by the Ontario Software Acquisition Program Advisory Committee (OSAPAC), which advises the Canadian Ministry of Education on the acquisition of provincial licenses for publicly-funded schools in Ontario.[37][38]

In 2019 Mindomo wined PC Magazine editor's choice award as best mind mapping tool for including powerful aspects of mind mapping coupled with the social aspects of knowledge management.[39] According to Mindomo official website there are currently more than four millions users of Mindomo worldwide.[40]
