Marty Hurney

Marty Hurney is an American football executive who is the general manager of the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL). He also served as an assistant general manager under Bobby Beathard for the San Diego Chargers in the 1990s.

Early years

Hurney grew up in Wheaton, Maryland,[1] and attended Good Counsel High School and Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

NFL

Early career

A journalist by trade, he first began in football for the Washington Redskins' public relations department when owner Jack Kent Cooke asked him to join the team.[2] He then served in the front office of the San Diego Chargers as assistant general manager to Bobby Beathard.[3]

Carolina Panthers

Hurney then joined the Carolina Panthers as the team's Director of Football Administration, before being named the Director of Football Operations the following season. Becoming the Panthers' de facto general manager, alongside Jack Bushofsky.

In 2002, Hurney was named the Panthers' general manager, a position he held until 2012, when after the Panthers began the season with a 1–5 record, he was fired on October 22, 2012.[4] Many of the best players on the 2015 Panthers team that won the NFC Championship were drafted by Hurney, including quarterback Cam Newton and linebackers Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis.

In July 2017, after general manager and successor Dave Gettleman was fired by the Panthers, Hurney was re-hired to serve as the teams interim general manager.[5] On February 4, 2018, he was placed on paid administrative leave as the NFL began an investigation into whether he had violated the league's personal conduct policy. When no evidence was found, he was reinstated by the Panthers.[6] On February 21, 2018, he was hired as the Panthers' general manager.[7][8]

Outside football

After leaving the Panthers, Hurney continued to work in Charlotte, North Carolina as a radio personality with fellow host Al Gardner on ESPN 730 radio. He was an owner of the station.[9]
