Playing career

Boyle made his inter-county debut for the Donegal GAA Senior team at the age of 18 in 1985.[1]

He was a member of Donegal's 1992 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship winning team and played county football between 1985 until 1998. Boyle primarily played as a forward during his GAA career and was a free kick specialist. He started at left corner-forward in the 1992 All-Ireland Final and scored nine points in total against Dublin to claim their first ever All-Ireland football Senior title.[2]

He played his last competitive game for county Donegal in the 1998 Ulster Senior Football Championship Final against Derry.[1] Earlier the same year, Boyle had contracted a virus that caused severe weight loss. [1] He was unable to start the first round of the competition but was later selected for the semi-final against Cavan. [1]

In May 2012, the Irish Independent named Boyle in its selection of Donegal's "greatest team" spanning the previous 50 years.[3]

At club level he played for Na Cealla Beaga.[4] In 2010, at the age of 44, Boyle made a return to Gaelic football as his club team proceeded to reach the final of that year's Donegal Senior Football Championship.[5]

He also played association football for St Catherine's.[6]

Media work

Boyle has been a columnist with the Donegal Democrat for the past 18 years. See "The Breaking Ball".[7]

Later Career

In 2016 and at the age of 50, Boyle returned to education to study applied Health and Wellness Coaching in St. Angelas College, Sligo.[8]
