Malawispongiidae

Malawispongiidae is a family of freshwater sponges found in the ancient lakes of Malawi, Tanganyika, Kinneret, Ohrid and Poso.[2] As presently defined, the family is polyphyletic.[2]

The family contains five genera and six species:[3]

  • Cortispongilla (Lake Kinneret, but validity of this genus is questionable)[2]
    • Cortispongilla barroisi (Topsent, 1892)
  • Malawispongia (Lake Malawi)[2]
    • Malawispongia echinoides Brien, 1972
  • Ochridaspongia (Lake Ohrid)[2]
  • Pachydictyum (Lake Poso)[2]
    • Pachydictyum globosum Weltner, 1901
  • Spinospongilla (Lake Tanganyika)[2]
    • Spinospongilla polli Brien, 1974
