Background

Ennio Morricone composed his score for John Carpenter's The Thing before the editing for the film had been completed.[1] Because of this, Morricone was not able to score the entire film.[1] As a result, parts of the final cut of the film that needed music did not have any, so Carpenter created a few pieces of music himself to fill in these gaps.[1]

The original mastertapes of Carpenter's music for the film are lost, so in 2019, Sacred Bones Records and Waxwork Records approached Carpenter to re-record these pieces of music for an extended play, Lost Cues: The Thing.[1] It is scheduled to be released on May 5, 2020, the same day that Waxwork Records will reissue their release of Morricone's The Thing score.[1]

Lost Cues: The Thing was created by Carpenter in collaboration with his son Cody Carpenter and his godson Daniel Davies.[1]
