List of hydroelectric power stations in the United States

This is a list of operational hydroelectric power stations in the United States with a current nameplate capacity of at least 250 MW.

Grand Coulee Dam, the largest hydroelectric power station in North America.

The Hoover Dam in Arizona and Nevada was the first hydroelectric power station in the United States to have a capacity of at least 1,000 MW upon completion in 1936. Since then numerous other hydroelectric power stations have surpassed the 1,000 MW threshold, most often through the expansion of existing hydroelectric facilities. All but two states of the United States are home to at least one hydroelectric power station, those without being Delaware and Mississippi.[1]

When this facility was built, it was actually the largest pumped storage facility in the world. Vermont Yankee being a nuclear power plant generates power 24/7, or what they call base load," Bakas says. "So as a result of that at night they had all this excess power on the grid. So somebody needed to take it. So this plant was conceived and built to take that off-peak power and utilize it through pumping water during off-peak periods.
